Although most of the votes are counted in Monticello, according to the city’s election commission, some 20 affidavit ballots have yet to be tallied into the final results.
In a race this close, those remaining votes could possibly affect the outcome of some tightly contested offices.
The unofficial results including absentee votes as of Wednesday morning are as follows.
In the race for the top spot in city hall, Mayor David H. Nichols II has a sizeable lead with 218 votes. Challenger Bobby Herring garnered 158 while Scott Stormo received 24.
Nichols’ margin in the ballots cast will most likely see him entering a fifth term in the mayor’s office. He felt confident with his victory in an interview Wednesday morning to address his constituents.
“Thank you for your continued support,” he said. “It has truly been an honor to serve the people of Monticello. I look forward to continue to work to make Monticello the best it can be.”
About his opponents, Nichols remarked, “I appreciate the clean race they ran, and I wish them the best of luck.”
The race for Ward One alderman could possibly see the ousting of incumbent Jerry Goode. His opponent, Donald Walters, received 46 votes while Goode received 34.
Ward Two is the closest race, as incumbent Alderman Steven Moreman leads David Penny by only two votes. Moreman received 40 while Penny received 38.
In Ward Four incumbent Alderman Kevin Garrett is leading challenger Larry N. Smith by 31 votes and will likely continue his position on the city board.
Garrett received 58 votes while Smith received 27.
Ward Five may see a new face in the alderman’s position. Challenger Richard “Ricky” Sykes is leading the incumbent Craig “Bowie” Davis by 18 votes. Sykes received 75 votes while Davis received 57.
Ward Three Alderman Martha Watts will remain in her position as the only uncontested candidate in Monticello’s races.
Official election results will be reported when they are released.
