Game 1 was a classic pitcher’s duel as the Lady Bengals broke open a scoreless game in the fourth inning when Taylor Simon singled before scoring on Ashley Subervielle’s two out RBI single two batters later.

Co-Lin responded in the bottom half of the inning as sophomore catcher Karla Beth Hux smashed a solo homerun to left center for a 1-1 tie.

The Lady Bengals scored the eventual, winning run when Codi Covington connected on a solo home run over the right center field wall.

Freshman Brooke Gonzales (6-1) took her first loss of the season; scattering 6 hits, striking out 6 and walking 2 batters.

Josie Porter and Kaitlan Melton each added singles for Co-Lin.

“Brooke pitched a great game holding LSUE to their lowest run total of the season,” said Lady Wolves Head Coach Allen Kent. “She stayed ahead in the count and really kept us in the game. We played good defense, but just couldn’t string any hits together.”

LSU Eunice scored a pair of runs on Taylor Simon’s 2- run homer to center field. The Lady Wolves answered with 3 runs in the bottom half of the inning. With one out, Kayla Craft was hit by a pitch. Karla Beth Hux, Hannah Roberts, Missy Romero and Shelby Mitchell hit consecutive singles to tie the game at 2-all. Kacie Berry’s fly ball to centerfield drew a throw home that was misplayed by the catcher to give the Lady Wolves a 3-2 lead.

An unearned run in the second allowed LSU-E to tie the game at 3-all.

In the third inning, the Lady Bengals chased starter Missy Romero (2-1) from the mound as they scored 4 runs to take a 7-3 lead. Simon led off with a double, Brooke Clark connected with an RBI single and Ashley Subervielle hit a two-run double. Sophomore Chynna Coghlan came on in relief of Romero in the third.

The Lady Bengals added their final two runs in the fourth when Codi Covington was hit by a pitch and brought home by Kelsey Hollier’s triple. Hollier scored on Clark’s sacrifice fly for the game’s final run.

Coghlan pitched a scoreless fifth inning and Meghan Johnson tossed the final 2 scoreless innings.

Brooklynn Guillot earned the win, tossing 6 innings and allowing 3 runs on 10 hits and striking out four batters. Elizabeth Delafield tossed a perfect seventh inning to wrap up the game and the sweep.

“We actually outhit them 10-9, but didn’t get it done with runners in scoring position,” said Kent. “Their pitcher really settled down after the first inning.”

Second baseman Bradi Davis led the Lady Wolves at the plate with a double and single. Craft singled twice. Adding singles were Porter and Jaylee Fernandez.

“It was a really good test for us, getting ready for division play on Saturday,” said Kent.

Co-Lin hosts East Central Saturday for a South Division twinbill, starting at 1 p.m.
