Lincoln County 12-year-old boxer Samuel Boutwell recorded another win in his young career, this time in the 85-pound division, at the Hands of Stone Boxing Tournament in Baker, La.
Boutwell is anticipating another victory this weekend at the Crescent City Boxing Gym in New Orleans. He has fashioned a 3-1 record and craves a rematch in hopes of avenging his only defeat.
He defeated Evontre Brown in his latest outing. Boutwell recalled the 3-round bout, featuring 1-minute rounds.
“I countered his jabs with a counter shot,” said Boutwell. “Then I got him in the corner and used head and body shots. Only the bell saved him.”
The son of Kendal Boutwell is a 7th grade student at Enterprise. He plays wingback and cornerback for the Yellow Jackets.
He trains at the ABC Boxing Club in McComb. His coach is ABC owner/trainer Andre Rials.
The elder Boutwell said interest in youth boxing is on the increase in Lincoln County and several youngsters are going to McComb for instruction. There are tentative plans for some exhibition boxing matches in Brookhaven next spring if the proper facility can be found.
Samuel hopes to compete next year in the Silver Glove Tournament in Kansas City, Mo., Jan. 30-Feb. 3. His long-range goal is to participate in the Junior Olympics.
In the meantime, he runs 2.5 miles every other day to stay in peak condition for his boxing adventures.
