Clarence was born in Brookhaven on February 26, 1956 to the parents of the late Clarence B. Johnson, Sr. and Mary Hall Johnson. He received the elementary school Buchannan Mathematics Award while also earning the highest grade point average. He graduated from Brookhaven High School in 1974 where he excelled as a saxophone player and received a band scholarship to Copiah-Lincoln Community College. Upon graduation from Co-Lin in 1976 he attended Mississippi College and received his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Southern Mississippi. He was previously employed as a teacher in the Fayette School System, Covenant House of Anchorage, Alaska, Public Library of Pearl and the Cobb County School System of Smyrna, Ga. He had a “back-to-basics” approach to teaching mathematics, and was admired and loved for his genuine concern for students to learn and move on to higher educational goals.
