Brookhaven police continue to search for a second person involved in a Friday burglary that ended with gunshots fired, authorities said.
A juvenile arrested Friday in connection to the event will remain in custody at the Pike County Juvenile Detention Center until Aug. 14 when he’s scheduled to appear at a juvenile court hearing in Brookhaven, said Police Chief Pap Henderson.
The juvenile, whom police have not identified, has been charged with trespassing, burglary of an automobile, grand larceny and aggravated assault.
At his August hearing, it may be determined whether to charge the suspect as an adult or as a juvenile, Henderson said.
Henderson said it’s believed the second suspect involved in Friday’s burglary is also a juvenile.
Dr. Justin Dickerson, a veterinarian at the Brookhaven Animal Hospital on Highway 51 discovered two males breaking into his vehicle late Friday afternoon and confronted them, said Dr. Bob Watson, owner of the animal hospital. Watson said a shot was fired at Dickerson and his stethoscope apparently deflected the shot.
Police have declined to comment on this latter claim.
“That part of it is still under investigation,” Henderson said.
Watson also said Friday’s burglary is the third crime to have occurred in recent months at his business, and all three during daylight hours. The incidents include another vehicle burglary several months ago and the vandalism of a truck in the parking lot.
While emphasizing that the investigation is continuing, Henderson said he doesn’t have evidence linking all three incidents.
“At this time I can’t really say they are connected,” Henderson said.
In a separate event Monday, a burglary occurred after business hours at R.B. Wall Oil Co. also on Highway 51 near the animal hospital, Henderson said. He said there no link with the Brookhaven Animal Hospital burglary and shooting.
“That right there is a situation that is not connected at all,” Henderson said.
Henderson said he believes an investigation into Monday’s burglary will be successful.
