School board OKs administrative salaries

Brookhaven School District trustees cleaned up a bit of remaining business Monday night, thus allowing administrators to soon have contracts for the new year.
In a special called board meeting, trustees approved the administrative personnel salary schedule for the new school year.
“We need to approve this so we can get the contracts out,” said Superintendent Dr. Lisa Karmacharya.
Trustees had intended to revisit the issue at the July 26 board meeting, but Karmacharya said doing so last night would allow the district to get contracts out to administrators quicker.
Trustees were unable to approve the salary schedule at the June 19 meeting due to a lack of a quorum to vote on the issue.
At that meeting, board member Willie Harrison, whose daughter Janee’ is the new principal at Brookhaven Elementary School, had to recuse himself, leaving only two members to vote when at least three were needed. The school board approved the new year budget at June meeting.
Last night, Harrison recused himself and board members Karen Braden, Stan Patrick and Erin Smith approved the salary schedule. Board member Dan Brown was absent.
Karmacharya pointed out the schedule includes no salary increases for the administrators.
“That’s one way we were able to keep our administrative costs down this year,” the superintendent said.
Karmacharya said a goal for next year will be to look at administrative salaries and get them in line as far as experience, education and time with the district.
The next school board meeting is scheduled for July 26, the day before trustees are to begin a retreat with Karmacharya. District administrators were beginning a leadership retreat today at Copiah-Lincoln Community College.
