Loyd Star Jr. High sweeps conference championship

The Loyd Star Hornets and Lady Hornetsjunior high teams finished their magical season as they capturedthe Co-Lin Junior High Conference Tournament gold Thursday night atLoyd Star.

    In the girls’ championship, the Lady Hornets claimed a 34-21victory over the Bogue Chitto Lady Cats.

    In the boys’ championship, the undefeated Hornets managed toovercome a sluggish first half to crush the West Lincoln Bears42-25.

    The Lady Hornets (16-1) rose to the challenge in the fourth quarteras they used their size to overpower the Lady Cats’ late rally with10-4 run to secure the conference championship for the second yearin a row.

    Jordan Shelby pumped in 10 points to direct the Lady Hornets. JulieSmith contributed 8 points. Toni Banks and Ali Gartman provided 6points apiece. Makenzie Smith added 4.

    “The girls played hard,” said Loyd Star coach Billy Vaughn. “Ourmain goal was to go undefeated this season, but Bogue Chittodefeated us in the Lincoln County tournament.

    “We used that loss as motivation to finish the season on a winningnote,” continued Vaughn. “Overall, I am very proud of the girls andthe season they had.”

    The Lady Cats (13-3) were led by Zariah Matthews with 10 points.Christian Black helped with 6 points. Lacey Montgomery drained 3points and Brooke Myers had 2.

    “Our girls fought hard,” said BC coach Christi Terrell. “Loyd Starplays and shoots the ball. Overall, we had very good season and Iam very proud of them.”    

    The Hornets (17-0) put the final touches on their magical season asthey outscored the Bears 26-13 in the second half.

    Levi Redd pumped in a game-high 19 points to lead the charge forLoyd Star. Brad Jasper and Lane Rogers continued the surge with 7points apiece. Javion Beard drained 5 points and Zack Arnold added3 points.

    “This was a great season,” said Loyd Star coach Gene (Moochie)Britt. “The guys have played hard all season to accomplish theirgoal.

    “This is a very talented team and the future looks very bright forthem,” continued Britt. “Overall, this was a good game against avery good West Lincoln team. I am extremely proud of the guys andthe season they accomplished.”

    West Lincoln (8-4) was led in scoring by Ronnie Eubanks and JasonWatts with 6 points apiece. Zekenith Porter contributed 5 points.Nick Washington drained 4 points. Seth Bivens and Lofton Sillsprovided 2 points apiece.

    “Our guys have improved throughout the season,” said West Lincolnfirst-year coach Brook Smith. “This was a tough, physical game butmy guys continued to play hard against a very good Loyd Starteam.”
