Salvation Army in need of bell ringers

The Salvation Army is looking for a fewgood men – and women.

    Volunteers are needed to help ring bells for the organization’straditional Kettle Campaign, which begins the day afterThanksgiving, Friday, Nov. 25.

    “Brookhaven has always been outstanding – we exceeded our goal lastyear, and we hope to do so again,” Salvation Army Capt. Rick Boonesaid.

    But to meet the area’s $40,000 goal for this holiday season, TheSalvation Army needs a lot more bell ringers, Boone added.

    Kettles will be set up at the two Brookhaven Wal-Mart entrancesdaily from Nov. 25 through Christmas Eve, Dec. 24. Volunteers cansign up to serve one or more hour-long shifts on any day during thecampaign.

    To volunteer, interested persons can contact Bobby Harris, campaignassistant coordinator, at 60-833-7663.

    Potential volunteers also can come by Wal-Mart Saturday, Nov. 19,to sign up. The Salvation Army will have a volunteer recruitmentcenter set up outside the store from 2-4 p.m.

    Last year’s Kettle Campaign allowed The Salvation Army to aidapproximately 1,056 people with groceries, clothing, furniture,medications, lodging, rent and utilities, said Loretta Grady,kettle coordinator.

    Grady encouraged students, clubs or others who need communityservice hours to volunteer as bell ringers.

    Besides the Kettle Campaign, The Salvation Army also sponsors AngelTree, which helped 228 families last year. The organization alsoprovided 256 children with school supplies, gave Thanksgivingvouchers to 56 elderly persons and served 771 people through itsCommunity Care Ministry.

    Besides Brookhaven, volunteer bell ringers are also needed inLawrence and Copiah Counties. Those interested in helping can callHarris or stop by the Wal-Mart signup center Saturday inBrookhaven.
