Scaring Up Fun Time

Students of the Mississippi School of theArts will welcome the community to their second annual Artoberfest,”Shadows of the Elizabeth Campus,” on Friday from 7 p.m. until10:30 p.m. and Saturday from noon until 4 p.m.

    The students’ annual fundraiser will take place at the EpiscopalChurch of the Redeemer, 230 West Monticello St. The weekend willconsist of Friday Fright Night for ages 13 and up, and Saturdayafternoon, for ages up to 12.

    Friday Fright Night will have a “Haunted Hospital.” MSA studentshave woven an elaborate story for Fright Night, involvingElizabeth, a nursing student, who becomes involved in the nursingschool’s experiments. She becomes deranged and Friday night is there-opening of the school.

    Visitors are invited to tour the Haunted Hospital to experience thewhole story and witness the grand finale. While waiting to tour,participants can learn Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” dance;concessions will also be sold.

    Saturday afternoon will be a less-frightening affair for children.There will be games, karaoke, arts and crafts, and interaction withlife-size cartoon characters, played by the MSA students.

    The Rev. Anne Matthews said when she was interviewing with thechurch, she researched the area on the Internet and wanted to beable to do something with the arts school.

    The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer hosted the event last year.Matthews said that it was a fun, interesting event and they did agreat job of cleaning up afterward.

    “I thought it was really scary” and “effective,” Matthews saidabout last year’s event.

     She said she is glad thatMSA decided that the haunted house is too scary for kids, so onlyteens are allowed this year.

    “We learned from a lot of mistakes last year,” said MSA seniorKierra Johnson. “This year will be totally different. We have allworked really hard.”

     MSA senior Jawan Hopsonsaid the event is “a way to showcase our creativity and talent andinvolve the community.

      “We’re doing this for the communityand not just us.”

     When asked what theythought about the Haunted House being in a church, Johnson said “Wejust think of it as fun. It’s more fun than trying to take awayanything.”

    Admission for Friday night will be $3 plus the price of anyconcessions and Saturday afternoon will be $2. Tickets can bepurchased at the door.
