Leadership, youth huge for Lady Cobras

Returning seasoned veterans and youthfulpersonnel should be key roles as the Wesson Lady Cobras kick offtheir season Aug. 16 in slowpitch softball. Wesson will have twoseniors providing leadership with Christian Woods and McKenzieRials.
“We are looking to build on our season from last year,” said WessonHead Coach Jackie Johnson. “We have some younger kids that willhave to step up and help in some spots in order for us to besuccessful.”
Johnson, 25, will be starting her third season at the helm. TheLady Cobras look to improve on last year’s 10-12 record, whichincluded 4-0 in district.
Wesson will have six returning starters to help in the field: MacieMcQuage at shortstop, Mak Rials at left center field, Hanna Brownin outfield, Abbey Smith at third base, Christian Woods at firstbase and Ashton Newman in outfield.
Wesson lost two players to graduation last year in left fielderShauntay Walker and second baseman Summer Rials.
Abbey Smith was among one of the leaders that led the team in 2010with a .460 batting average. Hanna Brown contributed by batting.444 average, Macie McQuage .384, Christian Woods .359, Mak Rials.328, and Ashton Newman .314.
The Lady Cobras assistant coaches are Michelle Nunnery and DaleLowery. Coach Johnson has 24 players on her squad.
The Lady Cobras will christen their new softball field for theslowpitch season by hosting Hazlehurst Aug 13. The junior varsitygame precedes the varsity game.
