Brookhaven Academy overcomes Columbia

COLUMBIA – Laura Beth Wright scored 13 points and Terah Winborne11 in leading Brookhaven Academy’s Lady Cougars in a 42-37 Mondaynight win against Columbia Academy.
In the varsity boys game, BA beat Columbia 45-34 and avenged anearlier setback as Sidney Chaffin netted 15 points and Gage Posey11.
Brookhaven Academy resumes play Friday, hosting Simpson CountyAcademy.
The BA Lady Cougars (21-3) expanded a 22-21 halftime lead byoutscoring the hosts 12-4 in the third quarter. Wright had 8rebounds and Anna Katelyn Mangold added 6 before she fouledout.
Summer Calhoun dished out 4 assists and Winborne made 4 steals forCoach Barry Gray’s team. Wright had 3 steals.
Columbia got a game-high 17 points from Ashton Scarborough.
The BA Cougars (12-9) got 14 rebounds from Posey as they outscoredColumbia 18-5 in the second half Brock Smith grabbed 11 reboundsand Chaffin 10.
Posey and Brennan Miller each had 2 assists. Chaffin made 4 stealsand Matthew Evans 3.
BA had 13 turnovers, 10 in the first half.
“We really needed this game as a confidence factor,” said BA boyscoach Dale Watts whose team snapped a 2-game losing streak. “Wefelt like we could compete with the best teams. After they beat usby about 25 at our gym, it really made it a good win for us.”
Tanner Pace scored 15 points for Columbia which led 29-27 athalftime.
