LCHS splits with Crystal Springs

CRYSTAL SPRINGS – Lawrence County and Crystal Springs split aDivision 7-4A varsity basketball doubleheader Friday night. Invarsity girls’ action, Lawrence County earned a 60-44 victory.Crystal Springs won the boys’ game 64-58.
Coach Vicki Rutland’s Lady Cougars improved to 13-5 overall, and2-0 in Division 7-4A play, behind 37 points from junior guardTiaria Griffin. It was Griffin’s second straight 37-point outing indivision play.
Senior center Alli Harris added 11 points. Griffin also had 6rebounds and 5 steals. Harris pulled completed a double-double with10 rebounds.
“We didn’t have a great night,” Rutland said, “but it’s great to be2-0 (in the division) after two games. We’re in anultra-competitive division, and we’re in for a lot of dogfights.Tonight wasn’t a great night, but we held serve.”
The Lady Tigers, coached by Danielle Busby, fell to 6-9 overall,and 0-2 in Division 7-4A. Marsanthia Walker led Crystal Springswith 16 points.
C. Springs 64, Lawrence 58
In boys’ action, Crystal Springs led for the entire night, once byas many as 13 points. Twice in the second half – once in the thirdquarter and once in the fourth – LCHS cut the Tigers’ lead down to2 points. That’s as close as the Cougars could get as CrystalSprings won by 6.
Coach Boderick Owens’ Tigers improved to 12-5 overall, and 1-1 inthe division. Pat Bridges’ Cougars fell to 18-8 overall, and 0-2 inleague play.
Senior forward Christopher Lawrence led a balanced Tiger attackwith 17 points. Diminutive guard Homer Lofton had 11. Roman Loftonand Terry Banks scored 10 points each.
David Haynes had 24 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 blocked shots to paceLawrence County. He picked up the scoring slack in the absence ofsophomore Brandon Daniels, who missed the game with a sprainedankle. Antonio Batiste added 12 points and 5 assists. Juan Williamsand Justin Barnes had 9 points each.
Lawrence County will resume Division 7-4A play at South Pike onTuesday night.
