Wesson kickers shut out McComb in soccer action

McCOMB – The Wesson Cobras defeated the McComb Tigers in two outof three non-district soccer contests Tuesday night. Wesson’s boysvarsity team won 4-2, and the boys junior varsity won 1-0 but theLady Cobras lost 3-0 in varsity girls action.

In first half action, Wesson’s Tony DelCid scored during the first10 minutes and was soon followed by a goal from teammate BrandonNettles. The next goal was scored by Tiger senior Chris Codding.Both teams had difficulty getting back into scoring range due tostrong defenses.

However, each team scored within minutes of each other beforehalftime; first from Wesson’s DelCid and next from McComb’sKecardarius Wells. Earning assists for Wesson were Walker Parrishwith one and Emilio Collado with two. Janis Johsik earned twoassists for the Tigers.

During the second half, Cobra defenders Alex Berry, Warren Furches,Jace McCardle, Josh Smith, and Ryan Spear continued to thwart thescoring efforts of the Tigers. Wesson’s goalie, Jacob Tarver, alsocontributed to the second half shutout.

Tony DelCid earned a hat trick when he made a beautiful driving runthrough the Tiger defense to score the final goal of the night,giving Wesson the 4-2 win.

McComb 3, Wesson 0

The Lady Cobras lost in a disappointing game against the LadyTigers. Wesson was unable to stop the scoring advances of AnnieArtigues who scored all three of McComb’s goals during the firsthalf. Wesson was able to hold the Lady Tigers scoreless during thesecond half, thanks to the return of midfielder Daisey Martinez whohad been out due to injuries.

Wesson’s boys junior varsity celebrated a 1-0 shutout against theTigers. The teams were competitive throughout the game but Wesson’spersistence eventually paid off when C.J. Viramontez followed up agoal attempt by Ryan Shirley. Viramontez’s goal gave the Cobra JVtheir first win of the season. Wesson’s goalie, Quinton Lindsey,was credited with the shutout.

The Cobras play their next district contest against the FranklinCounty Bulldogs Friday night at Copiah Lincoln Community Collegesoccer fields. The girls game starts at 5:30 p.m. and the boys playat 7 p.m.
