Hornets prevail in overtime; Lady Jackets clip Loyd Star

MONTICELLO – The Loyd Star Hornets had five players to score indouble figures to help capture their first win of the season with a71-64 overtime victory against their Lincoln County rival, theEnterprise Yellow Jackets, Tuesday night in the Lawrence CountyThanksgiving Holiday Tournament.
In girls’ action, The Lady Jackets (3-5) scored 21 points in thefourth quarter and held off the Hornets for a 49-44 win.
In earlier action, the Wayne County Lady War Eagles dominated Magee62-35. In the boys’ game, Wayne County crushed the Magee Trojans65-16.
Enterprise returns to action Monday, after the holiday break,traveling to Natchez to battle the Natchez Cathedral Green Wave.Tipoff is at 6 p.m. with the girls, followed by the boys.
Loyd Star resumes action Tuesday, traveling to face the WestLincoln Bears in Jack Case Gymnasium, Game time begins at 6 p.m.with the girls, followed by the boys.
Enterprise 49, Loyd Star 44
Senior guard Karla Beth Hux pumped in 20 points to lead the LadyJackets. Veonka Sanders provided a double-double night, collecting17 rebounds and 12 points. Caroleah Brister contributed 12points.
“This was a good win for us,” said Enterprise coach Jill Nations.”We shot the ball very well from the outside tonight.”
Junior guard Jordan Williams showcased her hot shooting hand bynetting 22 points to lead the Hornets (0-7). Erica Smith had 12points.
“We played a lot better than we did last night,” said Loyd Starcoach Billy Vaughn. “We still need to do the little things to helpus win games like protecting the ball and rebounding.”
Center Tyrisha Patterson led the Hornets in rebounding with 10boards. Erica Smith had 6 rebounds, 5 steals and 3 assists.
Loyd Star 71, Enterprise 64
Holden Butler was the leading scorer for the Hornets (1-4) with 17points. Terion Williams and Zach Smith provided 16 points each.Smith led the boards for Loyd Star with 14 rebounds. Jarred Bullockand Hunter Hooge contributed 11 points apiece.
“It is good to get the win,” said Loyd Star coach Gene (Moochie)Britt. “The guys played very hard and it was a total team effort.Overall, I was very pleased with their effort to battle back andcreate turnovers with our half-court press.”
Senior forward Sam Furr pumped in a game-high 23 points and grabbed10 rebounds to lead the Jackets (0-8), Nathan Foster added 15points. Thomas Allen had 13 points.
Britt’s boys outscored Enterprise 17-11 in overtime.
“The guys played extremely hard,” said Enterprise coach JohnKnight. “We have got to do a better job in finishing close games.Overall, I am pleased with our steady improvement in each game. Thekids will be ready, when the games really start to count.”
