Lady Panthers win tourney

After two rainouts this week the Brookhaven Lady Panthersfinally got to start their slowpitch softball campaign Saturday.The Lady Panthers plowed through the Wesson Lady Cobras 8-1 anddefeated the Lawrence County Lady Cougars 9-3 to capture theLawrence County Round-Robin Tournament.

“We played two good defensive ball games, said Brookhaven headcoach Lisa Covington. “We managed to get hits in both games to helpus win.”

The Lady Panthers will have their first home game Tuesday againstthe North Pike Lady Jaguars with JV action starting at 5 p.m.,followed by varsity at 6 p.m. Brookhaven also will host the WessonLady Cobras for a varsity game only immediately after theJaguars-Panthers contest.

BHS 8, Wesson 1

Brooke Hosick provided a strong pitching performance for the LadyPanthers collecting no strikeouts and allowing one walk.

Jessica Delaney absorbed the loss for the Lady Cobras with nostrikeouts and one walk.

Christen Benson produced the offensive spark for Brookhaven byhitting a 2-run homer in the third inning. Benson also collected asingle. Dana Herring and Rashana Stewart also provided assistancewith two singles apiece. Erica Bridwell, Brooke Hosick, SarahAyers, Madeline DeLaughter, Emily Freeman and Erica Lenoir had asingle apiece.

Wesson’s leading hitters all singled. The hits came from MacieMcQuage, Mak Rials, Hanna Brown, Abby Smith, Jessica Delaney andAshton Newman

Pitcher Brooke Hosick collected her second win of the season on themound by collecting one strikeout and one walk forBrookhaven.

Shelby Mitchell absorbed the loss for Lawrence County with nostrikeouts and no walks.

Erica Bridwell led the Lady Panthers’ offensive onslaught byhitting four singles. Sarah Ayers and Shelby Peavey contributedthree singles apiece. Dana Herring provided two singles. MadelineDeLaughter hit a double. The other hits were singles from BrookeHosick, Christen Benson, Emily Freeman and Erica Lenoir.

Mary Margaret led the Lady Cougars hitters with two singles. DaphneArmstrong collected a double. Kristen Sauls, Shelby Mitchell,Kristen Byrd and Jullian Johnson provided a single apiece.
