Wesson eliminated; Lawrence advances to state tournament

MAGEE – The Wesson All-Stars endured the sweat-soaked agony ofdefeat Thursday night in the finals of the Dixie Youth BaseballMajor 12s South Regional Tournament. Lawrence County edged Wesson3-2 in the battle for second place and Magee shaved Wesson 2-1 forthe third rung and a berth in the state tournament at Hattiesburg ,which starts Saturday. Both games were decided in the sixth andfinal inning.
Saturday’s state tournament at the Doleac Sports Complex featuresCanton versus Natchez at 4 p.m., Canton Youth vs. Magee at 6 andLawrence County vs. Yazoo City at 8.
Lawrence Co. 3, Wesson 2
On the mound, Tyler McLeod (8 K, 1 BB) gave up six hits and threeruns in a losing cause as Lawrence County scored the tying andwinning run I the sixth inning.
Starting on the mound was Blake Greenlee (3 K, 0 BB) who allowedsix hits. Jason Byrd (2 K, 0 BB) held Wesson hitless in the sixthand picked up the win.
At the plate, Farrod Green tripled for Wesson. McLeod and DanielLyle doubled. Singling were Justin Boone, Colby Porter and TreFleming as Wesson took a 2-1 lead in the fourth.
Lawrence County’s Joshua Stephens homered and singled in thevictory. Byrd and Travaris Cole doubled. Greenlee and Roger Rushingsingled.
Magee 2, Wesson 1
Matthew Burns (9 K, 3 BB) started for Wesson and gave up two runson 10 hits in taking the loss.
Magee’s D’Juan McNair (3 K, 3 BB) pitched the first three innings.He allowed six hits and one run.
Sam McWilliams (6 K, 0 BB) scattered three hits in relief andposted the win as he kept Wesson from scoring more runs.
Green tripled for Wesson. Blake Runyan doubled and singled. LandonLewis singled twice. Burns, Lyle, Boone and McLeod singled.
Magee was led by Nick Bullock who hit a solo homer. Patrick Ziladoubled and singled. McNair and McWilliams both singled twice.Jacob Berry, Kyle Curlee and Landon Herrington singled.
