Mustangs trample Brook in region baseball game

West Jones continued its impressive display at the plate Tuesdaynight, whipping the host Brookhaven Panthers 14-2 on Moyer Field.The Mustangs (12-4, 6-1) finished with 11 hits and moved closer toclinching the Region 6-5A title.
“We played well and we competed well,” said West Jones coach JoeyWard. “That helps in big games.”
Ward’s Mustangs had blasted Brookhaven 17-2 March 25 at Soso,avenging a 7-3 March 11 setback at Brookhaven.
“We are struggling right now,” said BHS head coach Randy Spring.”We’ve got to find a way out of it.”
Spring’s Panthers were limited to six h its by winning pitcherChase Stewart who struck out five batters and walked none in theabbreviated, 5-inning test that ended with the 10-run mercyrule.
The Panthers (12-7, 5-2) realized a 2-2 deadlock in the bottom ofthe first but were held scoreless the rest of the game as theMustangs plated 12 more runs.
At the plate, West Jones was led by centerfielder Derek Bynum whosingled twice and tripled. Vito Perna doubled and singled. BenStevens collected two hits in the 5-inning game.
J.D. Britt (2 K, 3 BB) started the game and took the loss.
The Panthers, who committed four errors, got a triple and a singlefrom Scottie Peavey. They play a doubleheader Friday at West Jones,starting at 5 p.m.
