Bears overpower Natchez Cathedral

NATCHEZ – Jay Case tossed in 19 points and the West LincolnBears roared to a 68-46 Friday night victory over the CathedralGreen Wave in Division 7-1A basketball action. Case was joined indouble digits by Brandon Robinson with 12 points as the Bearsraised their record to 11-5 overall and 2-0 in the divisionrace.

In the varsity girls game, West Lincoln whipped Cathedral 51-35as guard Tatianna Marshall tossed in 14 points and Kali Herrington11 for the Lady Bears.

West Lincoln continues division play Monday, hosting the MSDBulldogs.

The Bears (11-5) marched to a 34-20 halftimelead over the Greenies (5-6, 1-1). They got 7 steals and 6 assistsfrom Case. Chad Herring grabbed 8 rebounds and blocked 6 shots.Lucas Burris and Calvin Kees each had 6 rebounds.

“Natchez Cathedral matched our intensity in the first half,”said West Lincoln coach Lane Young. “We managed to hit our shots inthe second half.”

The Greenies got a game-high 23 points from Carl Hammitte.Daniel Huffines made 5 assists.

“West Lincoln killed us on the offensive boards,” said Cathedralboys coach Peter Arnold. “We did a good job until the middle of thesecond quarter.

“West Lincoln broke down our defense and went on a big runbefore halftime,” he added. “We are a young team and we arelearning.”

The Lady Bears (10-6, 2-0) bounced back from alopsided Tuesday night loss at Franklin County and remainedunbeaten in the division race. Hannah Knouse added 8 points, 7steals, 6 rebounds and 5 assists to the victory. Katie Mullins had9 points and 5 rebounds.

“We got after it in the first half but we’ve still got to cutdown on turnovers,” said Coach Young. “Our defense was good.”

Young’s girls sprinted to a 35-7 halftime lead, allowing him tosubstitute early.

“We just couldn’t make the easy shots early in the game,” saidCathedral first-year girls coach Bernita Dunbar. “We dug a big holeand couldn’t bounce back.”

Cathedral (4-7, 1-1) got 11 points from Ginny Daggett.

JV Boys Action

In the preliminary junior varsity boys game, West Lincolnrecorded a 50-27 victory, led by Lucas Burris and Darius Clark with10 points each. Logan King tossed in 9 points.

Cathedral got 9 points from Jamon Gray and 6 from DevinToussaint.
