Crawford claims Christmas crown

The new face of Brookhaven’s Christmas retail season was chosenMonday night at the Brookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce,and it belongs to Brookhaven High School senior BethanyCrawford.
Crawford was chosen by judges from a field of four competitorsfor the title of Miss Merry Christmas. Crawford said she wassurprised and excited at being chosen to wear the ChristmasTree-shaped crown.
“It’s really surprising, but it’s a good feeling,” she said.”Christmas is my favorite holiday.”
Miss Merry Christmas wears a fur Christmas cape and rides in aconvertible through downtown Brookhaven during the city’s Christmasparade, which takes place this year on Dec. 3. Miss Merry Christmaswill also serve as the chamber’s ambassador for all holiday eventsfrom November until the new year, pageant organizer Rita Richsaid.
“To be the role model of Christmas is an amazing feeling,”Crawford said.
Miss Merry Christmas 2008 Mallory Mills had words of wisdom forher successor, telling her to enjoy every moment as the city’sambassador of the Christmas Spirit.
“Have a blast,” Mills said. “I had a ton of fun last year goingaround Brookhaven and being a part of the activities. It’s a shortreign, but it’s fun. Take advantage of every opportunity you havewhile you’re there.”
Crawford, 17, is the daughter of Jim and Kathie Crawford ofBrookhaven.
