Wayne Co. sacks Panthers

WAYNESBORO – Senior quarterback Demarcus Henderson enjoyed acareer night, directing Wayne County to a 45-7 Friday nighttrouncing of the Brookhaven Panthers in Region 3-5A footballaction. Henderson ran for 2 touchdowns and passed for another asthe War Eagles (5-1, 2-0) flexed their muscles on the Sprint Turffield.
Henderson (5-11, 170) rushed 12 times for 230 yards andcompleted 11 of 17 passes for 155 yards. His 46-yard scoring runand his 32-yard TD pass to Randy Pettus gave the Eagles a 14-0,first-quarter lead that was expanded to 28-0 at halftime.
Wayne County impressed Ole Brook head coach Tucker Peavey.”Wayne County was very physical up front and we had a hard timecontaining their quarterback.”
Peavey watched his Panthers struggle offensively anddefensively. They were shredded for 621 yards total offense by aherd of running backs who combined for 434 rushing yards.
“Offensively, we shot ourselves in the foot with penalties,”Peavey pointed out. “We needed to score early but we didn’t get itdone.”
The Panthers finally scored in the fourth quarter. QuarterbackDuwone Harris scrambled 20 yards for a touchdown. Dewey Staileykicked the extra point and BHS trailed 35-7.
Harris led the Panthers with 13 carries for 72 yards. Hecompleted 4 of 17 passes for 33 yards. Semmie Smith rushed 7 timesfor 66 yards.
Lamond Powe scored a pair of WC touchdowns on runs of 1 and 4yards.
In the third quarter, the Eagles got a 38-yard field goal fromGarrett Reynolds and a 7-yard TD run from Henderson.
The Panthers (2-3, 1-1) host region foe Pearl River Central(0-6, 0-2) for homecoming Friday night on King Field. Kickoff is 7p.m.
