Hornets sting Bogue Chitto

BOGUE CHITTO – The Loyd Star Hornets successfully maintainedtheir Possum Bowl dominance Friday night by putting away the BogueChitto Bobcats 46-13 in a big Lincoln County battle on Troy SmithField. It was the first Possum Bowl game since 2000.

With the win, the undefeated Hornets improved to 4-0 on theseason while Bogue Chitto fell to 1-3 with the loss.

Loyd Star hosts North Pike Friday night. Bogue Chitto has anopen date.

“Our guys stuck to the game plan,” said Loyd Star head coachRyan Ross. “We hustled and fought hard. I was very pleased with oureffort.

“My hat is off to Coach (Garreth) Sartin for doing thingsright,” Ross added. “Bogue Chitto is well coached and he showeddiscipine by sitting out four of his starters due to missingpractice or showing up late to practice last Monday.”

The Bobcats had 4 turnovers in the game and the Hornets tookadvantage of them.

“We just did not show up to play,” said Sartin. “We had too manyturnovers. Loyd Star had a good team. And they took advantage ofthe short field position after the turnovers.”

Powering Loyd Star with 12 carries for 90 yards and 3 touchdownswas Marquis Hayes. Tradareous Wilson rushed 9 times for 76 yardsand 2 TDs.

Byron Kersee sparked Bogue Chitto with 14 carries for 60 yards.Javier Gee rushed for 24 yards on 7 carries.

Loyd Star took a 26-0 lead in the first half over Bogue Chitto.The Hornets scored their points in the first quarter. Wilson scoreda 9-yard touchdown, Hayes rushed for an 8-yard TD and the defensescored a safety, Hayes scored his second touchdown on a 4-yard runand quarterback Joseph Shelby connected with Adrian Newton for a22-yard score. Corrie Crowe made 2-out-of-7 extra points.

In the third quarter, Wilson scored a 8-yard TD followed byHayes with a 41-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 40-0.

Bogue Chitto scored its first TD of the game in the thirdquarter on a 13-yard pass play from Kersee to Gee. The PAT kickfailed as the Bobcats trimmed the Hornets’ lead to 40-6.

Fourth-quarter action saw Hornet Jamie Archer score on an11-yard run to give Loyd Star a 46-6 lead.

Kersee scored the final Bobcat TD on a 4-yard run to trim thedeficit to 46-13.

Defensively, middle linebacker Kevin Brothern directed BogueChitto with 13 tackles. Emanuel Magee had 9 tackles. Tevin Tobiasfinished with 5 tackles.

Loyd Star was led by linebacker T.J. Floyd with 10 tackles. Simsmade 8 stops. Collecting 7 tackles was Josh Butler followed by CodyLanham with 5.
