Noon accident causes power outage

About 1,500 customers lost power for just under an hour Fridayafter a freak accident on Brookway Boulevard.
Officials said when Doris Blackwell of Lawrence County waspulling her Ford van out of the car wash at the BP gas station, shehit the accelerator instead of the brakes. Officials said at thatpoint, her car collided with a parked vehicle owned by WilliamWarnsey of Hinds County, as well as with the air and waterdispenser.
A Southwest Electric Power Company guidewire was also a casualtyof the collision, said Southwest EPA Public Relations DirectorAzalea Knight.
“She hit a guidewire, which resulted in about 1,500 customerslosing power for a short time,” she said.
While there were no injuries reported in the accident, severalbusinesses up and down Brookway Boulevard were without power for afew minutes during lunchtime.
Brookhaven police officers directed traffic at the majorintersections on Brookway, as lights were knocked out from aroundthe Brookhaven Street/Brookway Boulevard intersection to Home Depotand Brookhaven Honda, as well as the businesses on the west side ofInterstate 55.
Brookhaven Fire Department Capt. Billy Beeson said the reportshows the call going out just after noon and crews returning to thestation around 12:55 p.m.
