Wesson home; LCHS at Forest Hill

The Wesson Cobras host the McLaurin Tigers Friday night in a keyRegion 6-2A game for both teams. It will be the Cobras’ final homegame of the regular season. The contest begins at 7 p.m.
In other area football games, Lawrence County invades ForestHill, Franklin County is at Wilkinson County, Jefferson Countytravels to North Pike, McComb hosts Florence for homecoming, SouthPike entertains Tylertown, Hazlehurst visits Jackson Bailey andAmite County is at Crystal Springs.
Wesson (6-2, 3-2) suffered a tough 39-14 division set back lastweek at the hands of Hinds AHS. The Cobras, under Tommy Clopton,must bounce back to maintain a position in the state playoffs.
McLaurin (6-2, 2-2) handed Enterprise a 34-22 defeat lastFriday.
“McLaurin is a very athletic team,” said Clopton. “Theirquarterback, Michael Young, is a very gifted player. He appears tobe more comfortable at what they are doing. It makes it rough todefense them.
“Cedric Walker and Kentrell Quick are guys they like to get theball too,” continued Clopton. “We have to come and play with a lotof fire and intensity. It’s senior night for us. Hopefully. it willhelp our guys find our intensity.”
In the loss at Hinds AHS, Wesson got 12 rushes for 105 yardsfrom junior running back Jeromy Smith. Rushing 9 times for 56 yardsand 2 touchdowns was Kyle Cross.
Starting on the Cobra offensive line are Jerry McManus at tightend, Zach Williams and Greg Hodges at tackle, Dominque Johnson andHank Jordan at guard and Matt S. Smith at center.
On defense, the Cobras were led by John Craft with 17 tackles.Matt P. Smith followed with 12 tackles.
Last year, Wesson put away McLaurin 21-14.
Lawrence County (7-1, 4-0) held off Jefferson County 33-30 in aclose victory last week. The Monticello-based Cougars, under MikeDavis, visit Jackson to face Forest Hill on an important Region6-4A contest.
Forest Hill (6-2, 3-1) handed Florence a 48-19 whipping lastweek.
In the victory over Jefferson Co., DAILY LEADER Offensive Playerof the Week Josh Cameron sparked the Lawrence County offense with25 rushes for 259 yards and 3 touchdowns. Kendrick Hardy rushed 22times for 170 yards and a TD. Matthew Wells finished with 12 rushesfor 109 yards and caught 18-yard touchdown pass from quarterbackAdam Watson.
The LCHS offensive linemen include Monterio Taylor, Joshua(Buck) Magee, Rickey Funchess, Carlton Parkman, Jamie McCardle andcenter Cody Killingsworth.In last year’s contest, Lawrence Countypounded Forest Hill 61-18.
Franklin County (7-1, 3-1) pounded Region 7-3A foe South Pike42-6 last Friday. Under first-year head coach, Trent Hammond, theMeadville-based Bulldogs prepare for winless Wilkinson County (0-7,0-4).
In the win over South Pike, running back Damien Burnettcollected 5 rushes for 71 yards and a pair of touchdowns for theBulldogs. Quarterback Jamie Collins scored twice.
Defensively, Franklin Co. senior linebacker Frank Hunt ledwith10 tackles, a forced fumble and recovered a fumble.
Last season, Franklin County dropped Wilkinson County 42-0.
North Pike (3-5, 2-2) handed Jefferson County a 20-12 loss lastweek in Region 7-3A action. The Summit-based Jaguars, coached byChris Smith, host winless Jefferson Co. (3-5, 1-3) in anotherdivision test.
In last season’s contest, North Pike whipped Jefferson Co.38-6.
McComb (2-6, 1-3) celebrates homecoming with Region 6-4A rivalFlorence (3-5, 1-3). Coach Randy Martin’s Tigers were clipped 12-10by Mendenhall last week.
Florence was hammered by Forest Hill 48-19 last Friday.
Last year, McComb nipped Florence 23-21.
South Pike (4-1, 3-1) visits Region 7-3A leader Tylertown (6-1,5-0) for another big game for Coach Randall Huffman’sMagnolia-based Eagles.
Tylertown barely got past Amite County 16-14 last week.
In last season’s matchup, South Pike won 6-0 over Tylertown.
