5-0 Bobcats roar past Cathedral

NATCHEZ – The unbeaten Bogue Chitto Bobcats were clicking on allcylinders Friday night. The Bobcats scored 30 points in the firstquarter, on their way to a big 44-14 Region 4-1A win over theNatchez Cathedral Green Wave.

With the win, the Bobcats improved to 5-0 in the division and onthe season. The Greenies are 3-2 overall and in division play.

“Brian Robinson’s opening kickoff return for a touchdown reallyset the tone for us early,” said Bogue Chitto head football coachGarreth Sartin. “Our offense and defense was really crisp tonight.Everyone stepped up and did their jobs.

“This was the first game for us that everything seems to clickfor us,” Sartin continued. “This was a very good win for us,especially if you win at Natchez Cathedral because it is toughplace to play here.”

Powering the Bobcats with 18 carries for 102 yards and atouchdown was Byron Kersee. Seth Avants rushed 8 times for 70 yardsand a TD. Picking up 53 yards on 6 carries was Cole Laird.

“When Bogue Chitto took the opening kickoff back for a touchdownand then did a short kick to us and got the ball. Then they scoredon the next play,. It took the wind out of us quickly,” saidCathedral head coach Craig Beesley.

“We could not regain our composure for the rest of the game.Bogue Chitto was ready to play from the start and got on the boardfirst. We struggled to get something going.”

With in a minute of the first quarter, Bogue Chitto scored 2touchdowns on an 85-yard kickoff return by Brian Robinson followedby a failed PAT kick from Shane Lewis. The second TD came on a40-yard burst by Kersee followed by a 2-point conversion by Kerseefor a quick 14-0 lead with 11:21 left.

Jeb White scored for Cathedral on a 6-yard run and HarrisonBurns kicked the PAT to cut Bogue Chitto’s lead to 14-7.

The Bobcats tacked on two more first-quarter TDs in the finalseven minutes.

Avants connected with Robinson for a 45-yard strike and hit D.J.Turner on a pass-play for the 2-point conversion for 8 points atthe 6:41 mark, pushing the Bobcats lead to 22-7.

With 1:26 left, Avants broke loose for an 8-yard TD followed bya 2-point conversion run by Kersee for 8 points and a 30-7lead.

In the second quarter, Bogue Chitto’s Michael Martin caught a20-yard touchdown-pass from Avants with 3:32 on the clock. Lewiskicked the PAT and pushed its lead to 37-7 .

Third-quarter action saw Avants hit Robinson on a 15-yardpass-play for the touchdown. Lewis nailed the PAT kick and theBobcats led 44-7 with 6:24 remaining. Avants completed 8 of 10passes for 104 yards in the game.

Cathedral scored its final TD with 11:50 left in the fourthquarter on a 20-yard pass-play from Preston Edwards to White. Burnskicked the extra point.

Defensively, James Anderson led the Bobcats with 10 tackles.Josh Graham collected 9 tackles. Colton McClendon and Kerseecollected 7 tackles apiece

“Now we must get ready for our next opponent, Stringer, andhopefully have the same results like we had this game,” addedSartin.
