Monticello man killed in shooting

A Monticello man is dead and a Lincoln County man is underarrest after a Wednesday night shooting in Cloverdale, authoritiessaid.
Officials said Kelcay Anthony Humphrey, 19, of 706 Earls Trailwas in jail Thursday morning, charged with murder in the shootingdeath of William Ard Jr., 25, of John Peyton Lane inMonticello.
Brookhaven Police Chief Pap Henderson said Ard was found deadinside 57 Cloverdale, where he had been staying. Humphrey does notlive or stay in Cloverdale, Henderson said. He said other arrestscould be pending in relation to the incident.
Lincoln County Deputy Coroner Robert Tyler said Ard waspronounced dead Wednesday at 9:12 p.m.
“He was shot in front of the building and ran in and diedthere,” Tyler said, estimating that Ard had been dead approximately30 minutes when he arrived on the scene.
Henderson said Ard appeared to have been shot once, and he wasshot in the back. He said Ard and Humphrey had no priorrelationship that police know of.
“There’s no known relationship, but the investigation is farfrom being over,” Henderson said. “We are looking for anothersuspect in this incident as well.”
The motive, Henderson said, is yet to be determined, sayingthere simply is not a reason for the shooting “that makessense.”
“Even though we’ve made an arrest in this incident, theinvestigation is still ongoing and there is a second party weintend to locate now,” he said.
Tyler said Ard’s body has been sent for autopsy.
“He’s at the state Crime Lab as we speak,” Tyler said Thursdaymorning.
Police officers and sheriff’s deputies had to control largecrowds at the scene of the shooting when residents, family membersand acquaintances flooded the surrounding area to watch theproceedings.
Ard’s family has not yet chosen a funeral home, Tyler said.
