BA brings home tennis gold

BYRAM — The Brookhaven Academy Cougar boys and girls tennisteams captured the MPSA State Class AA Tennis Crowns Wednesday atthe Byram Tennis Center. Coaching the BA tennis team is AlanTaylor.
“We fell short last year but we shuffled our linep and it workedout well for us,” said Coach Taylor. “Everybody pulled together andworked hard.”
Taylor said his youthful boys team has two sophomores, AustinWattts and Jake Baker, who are the oldest members of the squad.Betsy Lynch and Katie Beth Case are the only seniors on the girlsteam.
Dominating their opponents, the BA boys finished with 8 pointsto win their fourth title in five years. In the girls division, BAfinished with 6 points, followed by Manchester with 3.
Winning championships for the Cougars were Will Hickman in No. 1boys singles, Dudley Lampton in No. 2 boys singles, Austin Wattsand Jake Baker in No. 1 boys doubles, and Myles Melancon and AlexGray in No. 2 boys doubles. All of them won in straight sets.
In girls action, BA’s Terah Winborne won first place in No. 2girls singles, Betsy Lynch and Nicole Smith wonNo. 1 girls doublesin split sets over Indianola; Emily Ryan and Katie Beth Case wonNo. 2 girls doubles.
Brookhaven’s Rosemary Moak finished runner-up in No. 1 girlssingles, falling 6-0, 6-2 to Mary Moses Hitt of Yazoo CityManchester.
