BHS escapes Bogue Chitto

BOGUE CHITTO — The Brookhaven Lady Panthers broke a scorelessduel with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings Monday nightand escaped Bogue Chitto with a narrow 2-1 fastpitch softballvictory over the Lady ‘Cats. Brookhaven, the Division 6-4A champion(8-0), raised its overall record to 21-4 with the win and hostsNorth Pike Thursday.
Bogue Chitto (15-5, 7-1), the Division 8-1A leader, plays atLoyd Star today, starting with a 4 p.m. junior varsity game,followed by the varsity at 6.
Senior Terri Hodges hurled last night’s win. She struck out 6batters, walked 3 and limited Bogue Chitto to just 2 hits.
Kelli Howard, a junior right-hander, absorbed the loss. She fanned2 batters, walked 1 and gave up 8 hits.
“Terri and Kelli both pitched an outstanding game,” said BHS coachChad Walker. “We had some girls come up with some big hits.”
In the fifth, an RBI triple by Hannah Lowman drove in Addie Casewith Brook’s first run. In the sixth, A clutch single by SabrinaDelaughter sent Hodges home from second base.
The Lady ‘Cats scored their only run in the sixth. Howard’s single,plus a BHS throwing error, allowed Shaquille Burton to score fromsecond base.
Burton was among 5 BC seniors recognized last night in their finalregular-season home game. The others were Jessie Miller, CaitlynOwen, Mikki Mitchell and manager Brielle Jackson.
“It was a battle and BHS earned it,” said BC coach Scott Leggett.”They had timely hits.
“We just couldn’t get our bunts down tonight,” he added. “Ourdefense played well enough to win.”
Leggett’s girls didn’t commit an error in the low-scoring game.
Case, Hodges and Stevie Wright had 2 hits apiece in the win.
JV Results
In the junior varsity game, BHS and BCbattled to a 5-5 deadlock., Brook’s Brooke Hosick (2 Ks, 2 BBs) andBC hurler Toy Smith (5 Ks, 6 BBs, 3 HP) were the pitchers.
At the plate, singles by Paige Smith, Carey Crozier and MadelineDelaughter led BHS.
BC got singles from Hailey Estess and Adrienne Wallace.
