One dead, one hurt in Monday night shooting

HAZLEHURST – Police are on the lookout for a gunman in a Mondaynight shooting that left one Hazlehurst man dead and anotherhospitalized at the University Medical Center in Jackson.
Copiah County Deputy Coroner Dr. Rick Akin said 21-year oldCorey Dean Handey was pronounced dead at Hardy-Wilson MemorialHospital in Hazlehurst around 8:20 p.m. Monday after being shot inthe front yard at 162 Longwood Dr. Authorities say they are notsure who lives in the home where the incident occurred.
“He had one gunshot wound to the left rear shoulder, whichexited through the right chest,” Akin said. “At this time we’re notsure of the caliber of the weapon that was used.”
Twenty-one year-old Demond Carroll, a former football player forCopiah-Lincoln Community College, was also shot in theincident.
Carroll was taken from Hardy-Wilson to UMC with injuries.Authorities would not immediately discuss Carroll’s injuries.
“Demond Carroll was injured and taken to a hospital in Jackson,and the incident is still under investigation,” said HazlehurstPolice Officer Chris Granger.
Hazlehurst Police Chief Byron Swilley told The Associated Pressthat the alleged shooting suspect has been identified as EarnestJenkins of Hazlehurst.
Granger said the suspect is believed to have fled in a blueChevrolet Suburban with his wife and four children. A motive forthe shooting has not yet been determined.
Hazlehurst Funeral Home will be handling the arrangements forHandey. They are incomplete at this time.
