Hitless Hornets prevail

WESSON — One bad inning by the Wesson Cobras was all the LoydStar Hornets needed in pulling out a close 5-4 Division 6-2A winMonday night in varsity baseball action. And the Hornets won itwithout a hit.

Wesson senior right-hander Jonathan Grace (2-3) walked 5 battersand hit 1 batter in the fourth inning as the Hornets put together apair of sacrifice flys to overcome a 4-1 deficit and a 5-4 win.

Wesson travels to Loyd Star tonight for more division action.The junior varsity game begins at 4:30 p.m., followed by thevarsity at 6:30.

Grace finished the game with 7 strikeouts, 11 walks, 2 hitbatters and allowed no hits.

“Loyd Star made some great plays,” said Wesson head baseballcoach Hugh Knight. “We didn’t take advantage of our chances.”

Loyd Star held Wesson to six hits. Weaver posted his third winof the season with 6 strikeouts, 5 walks and 4 runs allowed on 6hits.

“Drew threw a good game,” said Loyd Star head baseball coachJonathan Breakfield. “His pitches were a little high. He showed alot of guts.”

The Cobras went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning on asolo home run by Grace.

Second-inning action saw Wesson score 3 runs and push its leadto 4-1 over Loyd Star. Sid Cawthorn led off with a single. With 1out, Brandon Allen and Matt S. Smith walked to load the bases.Chris Fink ripped a sacrifice fly to score Cawthorn for the secondrun. Caleb Broome smashed a double, scoring pinch runner Kyle Crossand Allen for the third and fourth runs.

In the top of the third, the Hornets scored their first run andcut the deficit to 4-1. Travis Keene walked to start the inning.Leebo Bairfield advanced to first on an error. Grace was called fora balk and both runners advanced to third and second respectively.John Smith sacrificed to score Keene.

The fourth inning turned the tide in favor of Loyd Star. EvanSmith, Weaver and Josh McCaffery walked and the bases were loaded.Chris Smith was hit by a pitch and Wesson’s lead was cut to 4-2.Keene walked next and the deficit was now 4-3 with no outs.Bairfield walked and the game was tied 4-all. John Floyd hit asacrifice blooper to score the fifth run and give the Hornets a 5-4lead before the Cobras retired the side.

Wesson left 1 runner on base in each of the final 3 innings andcould not score.

“It’s always big when you win a division game on the road,”added Breakfield. “We are coming together as a team. Especiallyafter losing senior Cayce Falvey for the season.”

Falvey sustained a broken collarbone recently.

Broome and Allen also singled for the Cobras.

In the junior varsity game, Wesson and LoydStar tied 4-all and the game was called after 4 innings.
