Columbia Academy upsets Brookhaven

COLUMBIA — Brookhaven Academy’s basketball teams enteredSaturday night’s games with Columbia Academy as the first placeteam in district 4-AA. The Cougars entered as the number one teamin Academy AA basketball and the Lady Cougars were ranked at number3 in AA respectively, with both teams anticipating another notch inthe win column before enjoying the Christmas Holidays.
But when the final horn of the night sounded, it was the Cougarsof Columbia that made sure the Christmas break would be oh sosweet.
Columbia pulled the huge upset of Brookhaven, winning 62-54before a large orange-clad home crowd. Columbia improved to 11-5overall and 2-0 in district 4-AA play. Brookhaven dropped to 8-2overall and 1-1 in district play, losing to Columbia for the firsttime since the 1996-97 season.
“We played very well tonight.” said Columbia head coach ReidMcCay. “We put ourselves in a position we wanted to be in andworked hard as a team.”
“Brookhaven didn’t play to anywhere close to the level they arecapable of playing.” added McCay. “They shot the ball very poorlyfrom the floor and never really got in to a rythym. But we’ll takeit.”
Colby Williamson scored a game high 21 points to lead Columbia.Travis Culpepper added 14 points as Columbia ended 11 years offrustration against Brookhaven.
Daniel Lofton scored 14 points and had 5 steals to leadBrookhaven. Blaine Roberts followed with 13 points and SawyerWallace scored 11 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Cougars losta regular season district game for the first time in 6 years.
Columbia 41, Brookhaven 34
Cara Joyner scored 11 points to lead Columbia as the LadyCougars topped Brookhaven 41-34. Adrian Johnson and AshtonScarborough each added 10 points in support.
Anna Katelyn Mangold scored 15 points and pulled down 7rebounds, and Hannah Watts added 7 points and 7 rebounds but itwasn’t enough as Brookhaven dropped to 11-2 on the year.
In junior high boys action, Chandler Rogersscored a game high 16 points to lead Brookhaven to a 48-34 win.Christian Keene followed with 12 points and Carr Tigner added 7points as Brookhaven improved to 8-2 on the year.
Taylor Fortenberry scored 10 points to lead Columbia.
In junior high girl’s action, Laura Beth Wrightscored a game high 12 points and pulled down 5 rebounds to leadBrookhaven to a 42-22 win. Summer Calhoun added 7 points as theLady Cougars improved to 13-0 on the year.
Hannah Martin scored 8 points to lead Columbia.
