BA hosts Mavericks; Copiah visits PCS

The Brookhaven Academy Cougars host the Yazoo City ManchesterMavericks Friday night at R.M. “Red” Stuard Field in the final gameof the regular season. The game begins at 7 p.m.
In area academy action, Copiah travels to Hattiesburg to meetPresbyterian Christian and Parklane hosts Lamar School.
Brookhaven is the District 4-AA champ and will host afirst-round game in MPSA state playoffs on Friday, Nov. 9.
Brookhaven Academy head coach Bo Milton watched Yazoo Manchesteron film and talked about the Mavericks.
“Manchester is a real good football team,” said Milton. “Theyare well coached. They have good quickness and speed. They havesome real good running backs. Their fullback is hard nosed. Theyare running speed sweeps, traps, etc.
“Defensively, they run a 4-3,” continued Milton.
Manchester (7-2, 3-1) is out of the District 2-AA and was shutout 35-0 by Leake Academy last week.
In the win over ACCS, senior quarterback Daniel Lofton rushed 12times for 116 yards and a touchdowns for Brookhaven. Loftoncompleted 3 of 6 passes for 78 yards and a TD. Corey Dickersonrushed for 34 yards on 4 carries and returned a punt 70 yards for atouchdown.
On defense, Jeremy James directed Brookhaven with 6 tackles andintercepted a pass. Following with 5 stops was Lofton.
“We had a couple of good practices this week,” added Milton. “Wehave to play a good ball game. We have to play focused, not turnthe ball over or give up the big play.”
Copiah Academy clinched the No. 2 spot inDistrict 4-AA following a lopsided 45-14 victory over the ColumbiaAcademy Cougars last Friday in Gallman. The Colonels, 3-1 in thedistrict and 9-1 on the season, will play on the road Nov. 9against an opponent to be decided.
Last Friday, Presbyterian Christian School was blanked 34-0 bySimpson County. The PCS Bobcats are 2-8 overall and 0-6 in District2-AAA (Division 1) play.
“Presbyterian Christian is good,” stated Copiah head coachScotty Cline. “They are a pass oriented team. They run lots ofscreen and misdirection offenses.
“Defensively, the Mavericks run a 3 front to 5 front,” continuedCline. “They are very well coached over there. We need to looksharp one last time.”
Powering Copiah in the win over Columbia was sophomore runningback Ben Boone with 11 rushes for 92 yards. Senior running backBrandon Greer carried 9 times for 54 yards and scored 2 TDs. Seniorquarterback Daniel Sims rushed 7 times for 54 yards.
Sims completed 9 of 16 passes for 197 yards and a TD for theCougars. Catching 4 passes for 124 yards and a TD was Bryce Guess.Hunter Greer finished with 3 catches for 89 yards.
On defense, Copiah was led by senior linebacker Alex Guess with9 tackles, a pass interception and a blocked kick. Brandon Greerfollowed with 7 tackles, including 1 for a loss. Sophomoredefensive back Russ Singleton returned a pass interception for25-yard TD. Boone intercepted a pass.
Last year, Copiah clipped Presbyterian Christian 33-26.
Parklane wraps up its season with a home gameagainst the Lamar School Raiders. The Pioneers, coached by CharlieNewlon, are 5-4 overall and 2-3 in District 2-AAA Division 1play.
Last Friday, Parklane hammered Silliman, La. 34-7 and LamarSchool shut out Starkville Academy 35-0. The Meridian-based Raiders(8-2, 3-2) are the District 2-AAA (Division 2) champs.
In the victory over Silliman, Josh Armstreet powered Parklanewith 15 carries for 255 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Pioneer quarterback Chance Schmidt completed 3 out of 5 passesfor 84 yards. Dane Hogan led the receivers with 4 catches for 72yards.
In last season’s game, Parklane fell to Lamar 30-19.
