Birthday panel OKs monthly party themes

The 150th Birthday Celebration committee designated four monthsfor sesquicentennial activities Tuesday during its largestgathering of members since being formed earlier this year.
The 11 committee members officially set the themes for January,February, June and July.
Although January was also expected to host the annual kickoffcelebration, plans to celebrate the event were confirmed duringTuesday’s meeting. Coordination has begun among emergency agenciesand churches to sound sirens and ring bells at a designated day andtime, said Rita Rich, committee chairwoman.
Students at all schools will also simultaneously launch balloonswith a message inside requesting the finder to write back to thestudent.
February’s theme has been designated as black history and minorityrights, but events are still being determined.
June will be themed around the city’s agricultural contributionsand tie into several extension service events scheduled for thattime.
“We’re trying to incorporate with events that are already occurringas much as we can,” Rich said.
July will celebrate independence and feature a Fourth of Julyfireworks display.
Rich said the committee is asking all groups to participate in thecelebration with their own events, but would like the committee tobe notified of the events so they could incorporate them in amaster calendar of events.
The committee will meet again Sept. 19 at 2 p.m. at theBrookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce.
