Warren signs pact with MC’s Choctaws

Elliott Warren is following his father to Mississippi College.Warren, a Brookhaven senior, has signed a baseball/academicscholarship with MC’s Choctaws.
Warren, 5-foot-9 and 145 pounds, said he plans to major inbusiness at MC and eventually enter law school. He is the son ofBrooks and Amanda Warren. His father, also a BHS graduate, was adesignated hitter for the Choctaws.
A shortstop on Ole Brook’s 2007 Class 4A state playoff team,Warren said he would be happy playing either of the middle infieldpositions at MC. “I would like to play second base. That’s more ofmy natural position.”
A starter as a freshman, Warren was a member of Brook’s 2004state championship team, working at second base. This season hehelped the Panthers to a runners-up finish in the Division 6-4ATournament, earning a berth in the state playoffs.
In his senior season, Warren batted .322. He collected 14 RBIs,6 doubles, 1 triple and 1 homer. He also stole 3 bases.
BHS head coach Randy Spring said he was happy to see Warren signwith MC. “Elliott really improved tremendously since he was afreshman. He is a good representative of our program.”
Warren, who started 115 games in 4 varsity seasons, was namedMr. Hustle on the 2007 squad. He was selected to the All-Division6-4A squad.
New MC coach Brian Owens said he was happy to have Warren on histeam. “Elliott is a good defensive second baseman. We are excitedabout him being in our program.
“We will get him in our weight program,” said Owens. “He willgain some strength and continue to improve.”
Looking ahead, Owens said, “In the fall, he (Warren) can facesome college arms. He works hard. We look for bright things fromhim here at MC.”
Four of Brook’s seniors have signed scholarships. Catcher MitchPappas and pitcher/infielder Josh Coone signed with Copiah-LincolnCommunity College. Pitcher/infielder Cole Newell signed withSouthwest Mississippi Community College.
Owens said he was in the market for a shortstop to replace JodyBritt of Brookhaven (Loyd Star) who is graduating. Britt played twoyears at Copiah-Lincoln Community College, helping the Wolfpack tostate/regional championships and a fourth place finish in the 2005NJCAA Division II World Series.
Owens is from Brandon. He played two years at Mississippi Stateand served one year as an assistant at MSU. He was an assistant atMC for one year and replaced Lee Kurykendall at the helm.
