Watson directs Wesson Cobras over Loyd Star

Daniel Watson powered the visiting Wesson Cobras to an 8-5division win over the Loyd Star Hornets with a home run and asingle in baseball action Friday night.
Wesson improved to 3-5 overall and 1-0 in division play. LoydStar fell to 0-1 in the division and 4-1 on the season.
“It’s always a war between Loyd Star and Wesson,” said Wessonhead coach Hugh Knight. “We played good defense and were able tohit . My pitchers did a good job. We are glad to get our first winin the district.”
The Cobras led 3-0 after three innings. The Hornets scored 2runs in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Wesson came back with 3 runs in the top of the fifth for a 6-2lead and 2 more runs in the top of the seventh for an 8-2advantage. Loyd Star came back with 3 runs in the bottom of theseventh to cut the deficit to 8-5 before the final out.
“We played bad baseball tonight,” said Loyd Star head coachJonathan Breakfield. “We bailed their pitcher out of a game becausewe swung at bad pitches. We must regroup and get ready for the nextgame.”
The winning pitcher was Jonathan Grace with 7 strikeouts, 8walks and 2 hit batters. Taking the loss was Jarred Rogers with 11strikeouts and 3 walks.
Contributing to the Wesson win with a pair of singles each wereChris Fink and Micah Davis. Grace doubled.
Loyd Star got a pair of singles from Ryan Wallace.

Wesson and Loyd Star remained tied 5-all as the time limitexpired. Leading the Hornets with a double apiece were LeeboBairfield, J.J. Jones and Reston Hebert. Singling was NickBritt.
