Brookhavenman guilty of Katrina fraud

A Brookhaven man was one of four Mississippians who pleadedguilty to fraud in U.S. District Court Friday in the wake ofHurricane Katrina.

Charles Lyles, of Brookhaven, pleaded guilty to a mail fraudscheme which resulted in him fraudulently obtaining FederalEmergency Management Agency relief benefits and hotelaccommodations, according to a Department of Justice release. Lyleswas convicted for listing his a false Brookhaven primary residenceaddress in his FEMA application.

Lyles faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in the custory of theMississippi Department of Corrections and up to a $250,000fine.

Similar cases were developed against Marion Griffin, of Morton;Glenda Spangler, of Morton; and Karynette Arnold, of Jackson.

All defendents are scheduled to be sentenced before U.S.District Judge Tom S. Lee on Dec. 1.

The cases were investigated by the Katrina Fraud Task Force,consisting of more than 20 federal and state law enforcementagencies. It was formed in Mississippi’s Southern District topursue and prosecute individuals who engage in fraud associatedwith the Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
