Vernon ‘Pop’ ‘Coach’ Hancock

Services for Dewey Vernon Hancock, of McComb, are 11 a.m.Saturday, March 18, at Hartman Funeral Home Chapel with burial inArlington Cemetery in Lincoln County.

Services will be conducted by the Rev. Bruce McKenzie, the Rev.Keith Smith and Dr. David Millican.

Visitation is today from 5 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Hancock, 74, died March 15, 2006, at McComb Nursing Center.He was born in the Moak’s Creek community on Nov. 12, 1931, to LulaMae Wallace Hancock and W.A. Hancock.

He was retired from his job with the transportation department,having worked with the Illinois Central and Gulf Railroad. He was amember of Arlington Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the UnitedStates Navy. He was an avid sports fan and was considered an expertin the statistics and strategies of many sports. He coached DixieYouth Baseball, as well as basketball, at the East McCombActivities Gymnasium and the old Summit School. He coached theSummit Rams and peewee football.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, MyrtleSanders Hancock; his brothers, Jimmy Hancock, Marvin Hancock andDean Hancock; his grandson, Robert Smith; and his son-in-law, JerryChapman.

Survivors are his son, Mickey V. Hancock, of McComb; hisdaughter, Cindy R. Roberts, and husband, Lee, of Summit; hisstepdaughters, Helen R. Smith, and husband, Walter, of Tylertown,Carol Chapman, of Summit, Charlotte Phillips, of Mandeville, NitaMcKenzie, of Arlington community, and Joy Steele, of Smithdale; hisbrother, Robert L. Hancock, of McComb; his sister, Eloise H. Lang,of McComb; his grandchildren, Daniel Roberts, David Roberts, AmandaRoberts, Penny Gendusa, John Smith, Sharon Hingle, Susan Dixon,Lamar Chapman, Thomas Chapman, Hank Chapman, Crystal Phillips, DanMcKenzie, Bruce McKenzie, Kristen Sisco, Ricky Lee, LarissaJacobsen and Jason W. Lee; his niece, Robbie Lynn Hogstead, ofNorfolk, Va.; his nephews, Robert Hancock Jr., of California, andJohnny Lang, of McComb; and one great-nephew, Evan Lang, ofMcComb.

Pallbearers will be Lamar Chapman, Dan McKenzie, Jason Lee,Thomas Chapman, Hank Chapman and Kenneth Cisco. Honorarypallbearers are David and Daniel Roberts and John Smith.
