Troops of the unit filtered in throughout December and Januaryand completed demobilization operations at Camp Shelby at the endof last month after a year overseas fighting terrorism.
“We wanted to wait (to hold the event) until all the soldierscame home,” said JoAnn Skipper, the event chairperson for theDetachment 2 155th Infantry Battalion family support group.
Skipper said she is uncertain about plans for an event for thepublic to welcome the troops home.
“I’m sure we will have one, but we haven’t discussed that yet,”she said.
A welcome home gathering for the entire 155th Brigade CombatTeam is planned for May 6 in Jackson at Veterans Memorial Stadium, according to Capt. Danny Sivley, the 155th Infantry Battalionexecutive officer.
More than 100 soldiers and their families attended theBrookhaven event Saturday.
“I think it’s been wonderful – a very good turnout,” Skippersaid.
Sivley agreed.
“I think it was great,” he said. “It’s always good for us tomeet with the families. It’s enjoyable to see everyone, especiallyat this time when we’re just getting back.”
No special activities were planned for the event, Skippersaid.
An inflatable jumping room was provided for the entertainment ofthe children and local businesses donated a veritable feast for thesoldiers, but most of the afternoon was spent with soldiers andtheir families mingling and simply celebrating their return from acombat zone.
