Wind symphony plans concert, fund-raiser

The Ole Brook Wind Symphony will performing its fall concert at7 p.m. Thursday in the sanctuary of First United Methodist Churchin Brookhaven.

During the concert, members will play pieces including”Ceremonial Fanfare,” “East of the Sun,” “Spiritual,” “Parade ofTallships,” and “Domingo Ortega”.

The group consists of various musicians throughout the communityand is conducted by Shaw Furlow, who is director of bands atCopiah-Lincoln Community College. Thursday’s performance will bethe symphony’s tenth since the group began in 2001.

In addition to the concert, the wind symphony is participatingin a nationwide fund-raiser to collect instruments for students wholost theirs to Hurricane Katrina.

Symphony members are asking for contributions of usedinstruments that are no longer needed. The symphony will send anyinstruments that need refurbishing to Mississippi Music in Jacksonfor necessary repairs.

The fund-raiser is sponsored by VH1’s Save the Music Foundation,MusiCares, the Mississippi Arts Commission, the Mississippi MusicAssociation of Educators and the Mississippi Music Hall ofFame.
