Lawrence Co. needs victory over McComb

The Lawrence County Cougars are in a must-win situation Fridaynight when they travel to McComb to battle the Tigers in a bigRegion 6-4A game. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

Other area football action features Wesson at Madison St. Joe,Franklin County at Wilkinson County, North Pike at West Marion,Hazlehurst at Jefferson County, South Pike at Columbia and CrystalSprings at Raymond.

Lawrence County, coached by Mike Davis, fell to No. 4 and istied with McComb in the Region 6-4A standings this week. TheCougars and Tigers are both 3-4 overall and 2-2 in regioncompetition. Lawrence dropped a tough 30-23 decision to regionrival Terry last Friday.

McComb is also coming off a region loss, a 26-7 beating at thehands of the Mendenhall Tigers.

Wesson, coached by Tommy Clopton, must recoverfrom its 27-0 Region 6-2A beating at the hands of St. Andrew’s. TheCobras (5-2, 2-1) travel to Madison St. Joe to face the Bruins inanother important region test.

St. Joe (6-1, 2-1) knocked off region rival Loyd Star lastFriday.

Franklin County, coached by Grady McCluskey, islooking to notch another Region 7-3A win Friday in Woodvilleagainst Wilkinson County (2-5, 1-3). Wilkinson County clippedregion foe North Pike 22-12.

McCluskey’s Bulldogs (4-3, 3-1) thumped Columbia 27-18 duringhomecoming last Friday. Gary Rogers, The DAILY LEADER DefensivePlayer of the Week, led Franklin with 10 tackles and interceptedhis first pass of the season.

Preston Griffith sparked the Bulldogs with 17 carries for 120yards and two touchdowns.

North Pike, coached by Adam Barron, is at WestMarion for Region 7-3A action. Barron’s Jaguars fell to 2-5 in thedivision and remain 0-4 in region play.

In the loss to Wilkinson, Milton Butler led North Pike witheight carries for 98 yards. Quarterback Robert Brown completed 5 of19 passes for 53 yards and was intercepted twice.

Hazlehurst, coached by Willie Brown, shut outJackson Bailey 57-0 in a Region 6-3A test last Friday. Brown’sundefeated Indians are on the road at Jefferson County. Hazlehurstimproved to 4-0 in the region and 6-0 on the season.

Jefferson County (5-3, 3-1) stuffed division foe Raymond 54-14last Friday.

South Pike, coached by Randall Huffman, remainsunbeaten and is ranked No. 1 in the Class 3A of the AssociatedPress High School Poll. Huffman’s Eagles (8-0, 5-0) visit Columbiafor more region action.

Last Friday, South Pike dumped previously unbeaten Tylertown34-14 for a big region win.

Detroit Rogers carried five times for 60 yards and a TD to leadthe Eagles over Tylertown. Following with nine rushed for 57 yardsand a TD was Chris Abron.

Kelsey Island completed 8 of 18 passes for 123 yards and twotouchdowns for the Eagles.

Crystal Springs, coached by David Virgil,slipped past Region 6-3A foe Yazoo County 36-35 last Friday. TheTigers invade winless Raymond (0-7, 0-4) for another regionmatchup.
