Lady Panthers whip Florence

Ole Brook’s Lady Panthers whipped the Florence Lady Eagles 9-2Monday at Martin Field in a Division 6-4A slowpitch softballshowdown. It was a sweet win for Ole Brook’s five seniors who wereplaying their final regular-season home game.
“It was a revenge game for us,” said Ole Brook softball coachLisa Covington. “It was senior recognition for us, too. I was proudfor our seniors.”
Senior pitcher Brittany Smith pitched the victory. Smith (17-4,8-1) struck out 1 batter walked none.

Jessica Dennis absorbed the loss. She struck out 1 batter andwalked 3.
At the plate, the Panthers finished with 15 hits. ShortstopAshley Sykes singled 3 times and tripled. Second baseman KatieStewart collected 3 singles. Left-center fielder Terri Hodges had 2singles. Third baseman Christi Martin singled and doubled.
Also hitting safely were Sabrina Delaughter, Kelly Vinson, JanaWallace and Smith.
Three singles by shortstop Brook Harris paced Florence. Thirdbaseman Candace Duke singled twice.
The Panthers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. They added 1run in the second, plus 3 more in the fourth and fifth innings.
Five seniors, including Sykes, Brittany Smith, Vinson, Wallace,Katie Smith and manager Jodi Ferguson were recognized in a pregameceremony.

“We had a great defensive night,” added Covington. “We turnedfive double plays.”
The division title remains up for grabs. Florence, with 1division loss, hosts Lawrence County today. Brookhaven visitsLawrence County Thursday for the regular-season finale. Only thetop two teams in the region advance to the state playoffs whichbegin Oct. 11.
Lawrence County has 2 division losses, previously falling toFlorence and Brookhaven. The Ole Brook-LCHS junior varsity gamebegins Thursday at 4, followed by the varsity at 6.
Today, Ole Brook visits Wesson for a twinbill, starting with theJV game at 5.
