Co-Lin Wolfpack making progress in preseason

WESSON — After a sweltering afternoon Picture Day session, theCo-Lin Wolves practiced under the lights of Stone Stadium Sunday aspreparations continued for the 2005 campaign. The Wolfpack kicksoff its season Sept. 1, hosting the Holmes Community CollegeBulldogs.
On Saturday, Co-Lin head coach Glenn Davis and his staff sentthe team through a 60-play scrimmage as a conclusion to twice-dailypractices. Freshman wide receiver Maurice Taylor of Vicksburgcaught several touchdown passes. Taylor originally signed withSouthern Miss.
Damoyn Carroll of Hazlehurst also caught a TD pass as freshmanquarterbacks Cedric Johnson of Americus, Ga., and Thomas Hinton ofPrentiss took turns running the offense.
“Our skill guys are coming on strong every day,” said Davis. “Weare young in the offensive line and they are learning to play at ahigher level.”
Davis said the Wolfpack had the most experience on defense. “Wehave several sophomores back who played last year on defense. Theyunderstand the speed of the game and what is required of them.”
Defensive linemen Michael Davis and Michael Woods have beenmoved to the offensive line to provide more depth. Offensive linecoach Carson Jeffers said he had 11 linemen to work with.
“Our line is working hard and getting better every day,” saidJeffers. Three players, Alvan Rankin, Lance Guillett and KyleTutor, are working at center.
Zach Ray, D’Angleo Johnson, Anthony Davis, Mike David and Woodsare at guard. J.D. Hamilton, Damien Jones and Kenny Green are attackle. Guard Wade Calcote’s father recently passed away and he hasmissed a week of practice.
At tight end, Thomas Skinner, Deandrea Davis and Ivan Hilliardare splitting time.
New assistant coach Dicenzo Miller is in charge of the runningbacks. Miller, a former Mississippi State star, is from Weir.
Miller said Rashon Robinson of Americus, Ga. at tailback andMatthew Delaughter of Brookhaven (Loyd Star) at fullback didexceptionally well during camp.
Defensive coordinator Brett Shufelt said the incoming freshmenare adjusting to a higher level of football, plus learning newschemes and alignments. “Our defense is playing with moreconfidence. Our sophomores are leading the way for thefreshmen.”
Shufelt said the twice-daily practice sessions have been achallenge because of the high heat and humidity. “Camp was toughbut our players have pulled together.”
Shufelt said the addition of volunteer coaches Larry Courtneyand his son, James Courtney, have provided needed help on defenseas they coach the line and linebackers. Veteran Calvin Green iscoaching the secondary.
Freshman defensive tackle Jessie Bowman of Brookhaven said theWolfpack has potential. “We could have a great defense if all ofthe pieces come together.”
Sophomore free safety Michael Blackwell of Bogue Chitto agreed.”Our defense is working hard. Right now we are looking for the besteleven.”
Co-Lin sophomore defensive end Ryland Wilson of Toano, Va., is apreseason all-American selection.
