Terry eliminates Ole Brook in region finals

MERIDIAN — The defending State Class 4A champ BrookhavenPanthers made a run at repeating but found the Terry Bulldogs toomuch Saturday in the finals to the Northeast LauderdaleRegional.

Terry beat Brookhaven 12-6 in the first game Saturday and then9-1 in the championship finale to eliminate the Panthers from thetournament.

Friday afternoon, Brookhaven defeated West Jones 4-2 in eightinnings and entered Saturday undefeated in the double-eliminationaffair.

“Terry has a good ball club,” said Brookhaven head baseballcoach Randy Spring. “I give them credit. They made the plays whenthey had to. They hurt us when we made our mistakes.”

Brookhaven wraps up its season with an 18-14 record. Terry(25-7) advances to the next round..

“I am real proud of the guys,” stated Spring about this year’steam. “We went farther than most people expected. Our seniors won70 games, a state title and back-to- back division titles over thelast 3 years. They did a great job. We are going to miss them. Weproved we can compete in the playoffs.”

Ole Brook seniors include Darius Perkins, Grant McDonnieal, both4-year starters, and Guy Orr .

Brookhaven 4, West Jones 2

West Jones’ Ray Ray Pickering singled, stole second, reachedthird on passed ball and scored on sacrifice by Brett Lawson togive the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.

Brookhaven tied the score at 1-1 in the third inning. Guy Orrwalked, stole second base on a passed ball and scored on RBI singleby Elliott Warren.

West Jones went up 2-1 in the fourth. Quinn Axton reached firston an error. Andrew Hutson also reached on an error, and thatallowed Axton to score the second run.

In the sixth inning, Brook tied it 2-2. Perkins singled with 2outs and went to second on wild pitch. Garrion Crockett walked.Pinch hitter Jacob Dunn reached first on an error and Perkinsscored the tying run.

West Jones pitcher Jacob Koechner gave up singles to Warren andPerkins in the top of the eighth. Crockett singled to score Warrenfor the third run. A fielding error in left field allowed Perkinsto score and give Brookhaven a 4-2 lead and win.

Freshman southpaw Paxton King (3-3) was the winning pitcher with2 earned runs, 2 hits, 2 walks and 9 strikeouts.

Terry 12, Brookhaven 6

In Saturday’s first game, Brookhaven trailed Terry 3-0 goinginto the top of second. McDonnieal singled, took second on a passedball and scored on a fielding error by the Terry first baseman tocut the lead to 3-1.

Terry scored 2 runs in the second inning with two outs, off a2-run home run by Jess Shelby that scored Coty Saranthus for a 5-1lead.

In the top of the third, Warren was hit by a pitch and Crockettsmashed a 2-run homer over the left field light tower, clearing itby 20 feet (400 feet) and the Terry lead was 5-3.

In the bottom of the third, Terry scored a run to go up 6-2 andadded three more in the fourth for the 8-3 lead..

The Panthers scored two runs in the fourth by Brandt Hinton andZack Watson. In the seventh, Mitch Pappas scored a run on anerror.

Powering the Panthers with 3 singles was Perkins. McDonnieal hit2 singles.

Perkins (3-3) absorbed the loss with 4 strikeouts, no walks andgave up 4 runs on 4 hits. Hinton and Watson worked relief.

Charlie Shearer got the win pitcher in 7 innings. with 1 earnedrun, 5 hits, 5 strikeouts and 2 walks.

Terry 9, Brookhaven 1

In Saturday’s second game, Brookhaven went up 1-0 in thetop of the third on a solo home run by Perkins. Terry tied it up at1-all in the bottom of the third. Adam Cook doubled and went tothird on an error. Antwoin Dixon singled to score Cook for thetie.

In the fourth inning, Terry’s Blake Pennock belted asolo homer for a 2-1 lead. In the fourth, Terry tacked on four moreruns for a 6-1 lead.

Terry scored 2 runs in the 5th and 6thinnings.

Adam Cook (9-4) got the win with 5 earned runs on 6hits, 2 walks and no strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. Sherear workedthe final 3 2/3 innings in relief.

Newell (3-2) started and worked 3 2/3 innings with 5runs (3 earned) allowed on 6 hits, 2 walks and 3 strikeouts. JoshCoone worked final 2 2/3 innings.

At the plate, Perkins also doubled for the Panthers.Dunn had two hits.
