Wesson boys take 2A consolation; Loyd Star girls fall

The Wesson Cobras whipped the McLaurin Tigers 74-46 Friday nightin the consolation game of the Division 6-2A Tournament at LoydStar Gymnasium. It was the Cobras 20th win of the season.
In the girls consolation game, the St. Andrew’s Lady Saints beatthe Loyd Star Lady Hornets 53-46.
The Piney Woods Tornados nipped the Hinds AHS Bulldogs 58-56 inthe boys championship game while the Lady Bulldogs knocked off theLady Tornados 45-27 for the girls title.
All four teams advance to the South Mississippi State 2Aplayoffs this week. The girls play on Monday and the boys onTuesday.
The Wesson boys travel to Kemper County Tuesday night for thefirst round of the South Mississippi 2A Playoffs. Williams Sullivanbeat Kemper County 64-59 Friday at Newton.
The Loyd Star girls are on the road Monday night atPhiladelphia. Friday night, Philadelphia beat Newton County 69-68for first place.
St. Andrew’s 53, Loyd Star 46
The 14-11 Loyd Star girls, coached by Lori Britt, led St.Andrew’s 8-7 at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Saints(19-11) came back to take a 1-point, 21-20 lead over the LadyHornets at the half.
“We had too many turnovers,” said Coach Britt of the 23 miscues.”We didn’t play smart at the end.”
A 14-5 run in the third quarter by St. Andrew’s gave thevisitors a 35-25 point-edge going into the final frame.
Leading Loyd Star with 22 points was senior guard Shara Johnson.Hailey Ratcliff followed with 10 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals and 4assists. Porsha Jones pulled down 5 rebounds. Collecting 4rebounds, making 23 steals and following with 2 assists was ShannonChester. Johnson and Ratcliff were selected to the All-Regionteam.
St. Andrew’s got a game-high 23 points from LaReina Adams.Rachel Sanders finished with 11 points.
Wesson 78, McLaurin 46
The 20-9 Cobras, coached by Ron Kessler, were directed to thewin on senior guard Collin King’s 24 points, 10 rebounds, 5 stealsand assists. Blake Pickett netted 18 points and grabbed 6 rebounds.Following with 11 points and 4 rebounds was Mason Warren. AdrienMerchant finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds, 3 steals and 3assists.
King and Wade Williams were named to the All Division team.Alexis Crosby from the Wesson girls team was selected.
Wesson led 12-9 in the first quarter and pushed its lead to28-16 over McLaurin at the half. Second-half action saw the Cobrasoutscore the Tigers 46-30 to clinch the win.
“We played well for 4 quarters,” said Kessler following the win.”We executed offensively real well. We had a great effort fromBlake and Collin.”
McLaurin (10-20) got 16 points from Clifton Quick. Jamille Ervinfollowed with 9 points.
Piney Woods 58, Hinds AHS 56
Powering the champion Tornados with 18 points was AbdullahBoune. Scoring 15 points was Allen Aragbaye. Steven Shivers netted11 points followed by Dean Hadley with 10.
Piney Woods improved to 14-17 with the win.
Hinds AHS (24-5) was led by JaCorey Wright with 25 points.Scoring 14 points was Mario Webb. Joseph White and Oshad Loftonfinished with 10 points apiece.
Hinds AHS 45, Piney Woods 27
The Hinds AHS girls (25-4) got 17 points from Jerrica Thomas inthe title game. Patricia Fultz finished with 12 points.
Piney Woods (17-10) was led by Ashley Williams with 13points.
