Lady Wolves win; men fall to Hinds

UTICA –Sophomore forward Travalyn Smith pumped in a game-high22 points Thursday night to lead the Co-Lin Lady Wolves to a 75-45South Division win over the Hinds Lady Eagles. Smith also grabbed 7rebounds, made 2 steals and had 2 assists.
In the men’s game, Hinds knocked off Co-Lin 76-65.
The Lady Wolves improved to 14-9 on the season and 7-5 in thedivision. The Co-Lin men are 10-2 in the division and 16-7overall.
Co-Lin hosts division rival Pearl River Monday for two games. Thewomen begin play at 6 p.m. followed by the men.
Co-Lin 75, Hinds 45
According to Co-Lin women’s head coachGwyn Young, his Lady Wolves made 10 of 21 free throws in the firsthalf.
“In the second half, we started off slow and turned the ball overabout 5 times in the first 2 minutes,” said Young. “After that wesettled down and moved the ball well on offense. We still had toomany unforced turnovers during the game.”
Contributing to the Co-Lin win with 13 points, 5 rebounds and 3assists was Crystal Brown. Jessica Melton pulled down 8 rebounds.Kristian McCray followed with 7 rebounds. Gloria Lewis led with 6assists.
Hinds got 11 points and 6 rebounds from Debra Brown. BritneyLorthridge followed with 9 points and 8 rebounds.
Hinds 76, Co-Lin 65
In men’s action, Hinds led Co-Lin 35-33 at the half.
“We weren’t mentally prepared when we boarded the bus to leave,”said Co-Lin men’s head coach Dennis Sims. “We picked a poor time tostart believing that we could win games as individuals and not as ateam.
” It’s all about effort and attitude and ours wasn’t good enough.We’ve got to make plays and that’s what Hinds did.”
Sophomore guard Dexter Middleton led the Wolves with 20 point,going 8 of 10 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free throw line.Middleton also pulled down 6 rebounds and had 2 assists. JoeHolliday finished with 13 points and 3 rebounds. Brandon Castongrabbed 4 rebounds, made 2 steals and had 2 assists.
Kenron Jackson powered Hinds with 22 points and 10 rebounds. KikiChristmas netted 14 points. Jenario Bunton finished with 12 pointsfollowed by 10 from Stephan Smith.
