Saints ambush Loyd Star Hornets

RIDGELAND — Brian Smith and Terry Frazier fired in 18 pointsapiece to lead the St. Andrew’s Saints for a 69-52 Division 6-2Awin over the Loyd Star Hornets Friday night.
In the varsity girls game, St. Andrew’s knocked off Loyd Star53-33, paced by Maeve Wilson’s 13 points.
The Hornets (13-9, 1-7) were led by RussellBrewer’s 12 points and 2 steals. Brett Fells fired in 11 points andled off the backboards with 10 rebounds and made 2 steals. DrewCase and Dwayne Branning finished with 10 points apiece. KordaeOtis grabbed 6 rebounds followed by Branning with 5.
“We shot free throws poorly,” said Loyd Star boys coach MoochieBritt. The Hornets were 3 of 12 on the night. “We played well forthree quarters and the last quarter killed us.”
Loyd Star was outscored by St. Andrew’s 28-16 in the finalframe.
The Lady Hornets (10-12, 3-5) were minus pointguard Kristin Newell who was hospitalized Thursday, suffering fromdehydration and a severe sinus infection. They also were minusleading scorer Shara Johnson much of the game due to foul trouble.Johnson was held to 2 points.
“St. Andrew’s hurt us with their press,” said Loyd Star girlscoach Lori Britt. “We missed our point guard.”
Britt’s daughter, senior guard Jordan Britt, is scheduled tohave knee surgery Feb. 8, to repair a torn ACL.
On the backboards, Hailey Ratcliff had 9 rebounds and HeatherCarmichal 5 for Loyd Star. Johnson had 3 assists. Shannon Chestermade 2 assists.
Junior varsity boys
The Hornets fell to the Saints 45-29 in JV boys play. GaryJohnson led Loyd Star with 8 points followed by Steve Watts with 6and Matthew Henderson with 5.
Loyd Star hosts Madison St. Joseph in division action Tuesdaynight, with three games on tap. The JV boys kick off action at 5p.m. followed by the varsity girls at 6.
