Lady Panthers top Terry; boys bow

Brookhaven’s Lady Panthers got offensive Friday night inSinclair Gymnasium. Playing their best game of the season, theywhipped Terry’s Lady Bulldogs 61-35 in a Division 6-4A contest,directed by Portia Dickey’s 13 points.
In the varsity boys game, Terry humbled the Panthers 72-37,sparked by Joe Willis with 16 points.
The Lady Panthers (6-12, 2-0) are unbeaten indivision play after having one of their best weeks of practice,according to Ole Brook girls coach Billy Holmes.
“We probably had our best practices this week,” said Holmes. “Wewere focused. We put things together on offense and our transitiongame on defense was the best it has been.”
Holmes proudly pointed to the statistics sheet. “We only hadfive turnovers. We worked hard on beating their press.
“Blanche (Wilson) did a good job dishing off to her teammates,”Holmes added.
Wilson, a junior point guard, had 12 points, 5 assists and 4steals. “We played together. This was probably our best game,” saidWilson.
Freshman center Swayze Black reached double digits, scoring 11points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
Senior guard Ashley Leggett, who made 3 assists and scored 7points, said the Lady Panthers were ready to play. “We played as ateam and we executed.”
Ole Brook claimed a 38-13 halftime lead. A late jumper by Dickeygave the Lady Panthers their 25-point, halftime margin. Dickey alsohad 6 rebounds in the victory.
Coached by Vince Granberry, the Lady Bulldogs were unable tomatch Ole Brook’s offensive output. They trailed 53-19 starting thefourth quarter.
The Panthers (7-11, 0-2) continued to strugglethrough a major rebuilding season. They were outmanned by thetaller Bulldogs who are coached by Reginald Magee.
Ole Brook managed a season-low 3 points in the first quarter,falling behind 22-3. The Panthers trailed 40-13 at halftime.
The Bulldogs (8-7, 2-2) were led by Willis who got help fromMatt Fortson with 13 points and Terracio Powell 10.
In the first quarter, Ole Brook senior center Bud Chatman wascharged with a technical foul. Powell responded by sinking 4straight free throws for a 12-1 lead with 3:20 showing.
Chatman provided the small crowd with a thundering,third-quarter dunk but the Panthers were down 61-30. Chatman andfreshman Charles Rancifer led Coach Ronald Hines’ team with 7points apiece.
Anthony Dixon, Terry’s All-Region Football Co-Offensive Playerof the Year, scored 9 points in the victory.
Brookhaven continues division play Tuesday night, hosting theWingfield Falcons.
