Co-Lin teams rip Coahoma

CLARKSDALE — For the second time in less than two weeks, theCo-Lin Wolves and Lady Wolves swept a basketball doubleheader fromthe Coahoma Tiger teams. On Nov. 8, the Co-Lin women dumped Coahoma89-52 and the Wolves whipped the Tigers 92-64 at MullenGymnasium.

Thursday night, the Lady Wolves mauled the Lady Tigers 89-45 andthe Co-Lin men crushed Coahoma 85-70.

Co-Lin will play in the two-day Southwest Tournament beginningMonday, Nov. 22. The Wolves and Lady Wolves take on Holmes at 2p.m. and 4.

Co-Lin 89, Coahoma 45

“In the first half, our defense was good and we were able to getoffensive points from our defense,” said Co-Lin women’s head coachGwyn Young.

The Lady Wolves led the Lady Tigers 47-23.

“In the second half, we executed on offense very well in thefirst 12 minutes and got some good shots,” added Young.

Powering the Co-Lin women with 14 points and seven rebounds wassophomore forward Travalyn Smith. Loretta Martin and Dana Kingcollected 12 points apiece. King nailed 4 three-pointers in thegame. Netting 10 points and grabbing seven rebounds was LaquitaArd. Tops off the backboards with 10 rebounds was KristianMcCray.

Leading Coahoma with nine points was Chanta Mansfield. LaToyaMorris pulled down eight rebounds.

“We still need to improve on defense and cut down on unforcedturnovers,” added Young. “It was a good win on the road andeveryone got to play at least 12 minutes during the game.”

Co-Lin 85, Coahoma 70

According to Co-Lin men’s head coach Dennis Sims, Coahoma playedthem better on their home floor than at Co-Lin 10 days ago.

The Wolves led the Tigers 40-36 at the half.

“Our depth seemed to slow the Tigers down during the second halfwhen we pushed the lead to 68-71 with seven minutes left.”

Sophomore guard Dexter Middleton directed the Wolves with 21points and four rebounds. Derrick Stewart and Ledell Eackles addedsupport with 17 points apiece. Joe Holliday finished with 12points.

“Dexter Middleton and Derrick Stewart really gave us a lift onboth ends of the floor,” added Sims. Stewart scored a career-high17 points coming off the bench.

Leading Co-Lin on the backboards with eight rebounds was ArvelKeys. Following with seven rebounds was Tremaine Enoch and Stewartwith five.

For Coahoma, Richard Cannon led with 16 points and six rebounds.Earl Curry fired in 12 points. Collecting 11 points each were EricVictor and LaDarrin Davis.
