May powers Enterprise over West Lincoln

Showing no lasting effects from last week’s disappointing loss,the Enterprise Yellow Jackets came out smoking Friday night andgarnered a 26-14 victory over the visiting West Lincoln Bears onHarry L. Cole, Sr., Field.

The win boosted Enterprise to 2-1 on the season (1-0 in Region4-1A action) and dropped West Lincoln to 0-3 (0-1 in Region4-1A).

“Enterprise is every bit as physical a team as I thought theywere,” said Bears head coach Brooks Burns. “They are well-coachedand have a lot of fun playing. We just played the worst first halfwe’ve played all year but we played a lot tougher in the secondhalf.”

After being shutout in the first half, West Lincoln regrouped toscore two second half touchdowns.

Enterprise took possession of the ball first and wasted littletime getting on the scoreboard. Tailback Terrell May scored thefirst of his four touchdowns on an eight-yard run with 8:10 to playin the opening quarter. The scored capped a seven-play, 65-yarddrive and made the score 6-0 after a missed extra point.

After stopping the Bears’ first drive on four plays, May pickedup his second touchdown for the Jackets on an 18-yard run with 2:04remaining in the opening stanza. The play completed an eight-play,58-yard march. Cory Everett passed to Alex Powell for the two-pointconversion and a 14-0 Enterprise advantage.

A Blake McKee interception led to the next Enterprise touchdown.Taking possession of the ball at their own 48-yard line followingthe pickoff, The Jackets reached paydirt in only four plays withEverett hitting May on a 17-yard strike. The missed PAT left thescore at 20-0 with 6:40 to play in the first half and closed outthe first half scoring.

The third quarter remained scoreless until the 1:35 mark whenMay picked up his final touchdown, a four-yard run, to end aseven-play, 49-yard drive set up by another McKee interception.Following the unsuccessful PAT, Enterprise held a 26-0 lead.

The Bears ended the shutout only 12 seconds later. Following theEnterprise kickoff, Kevin Lofton fired a pass to Daniel Lofton whoeluded all tacklers and raced 66-yards for the touchdown. The extrapoint attempt failed, leaving the score at 26-6.

The final points of the game came on the last play of the game.A three-yard scamper by Kevin King completed a nine-play, 57-yardWest Lincoln march. Kevin Lofton ran for the two-point conversionwith no time left on the clock.

“We played a little better offensively (than last week),” saidEnterprise head coach Mac Bezet. “But we didn’t improve as much ondefense. We’re trying to make this a team effort. We can’t winwithout that. We need to grow and play as a team.”

Darnell Sampson and Mark Case both had 39 yards rushing to leadthe Bears. Aaron McCaffery added 11 yards.

Lofton completed three of eight passes for 87 yards and atouchdown. Sampson had two passes intercepted. Daniel Lofton had a66-yard touchdown catch while Hunter McDowell and Sampson both hada catch for 17 and four yards, respectively.

Roberts had a 31-yard punt while Sampson punted once for 30yards. The Bears had eight first downs and were penalized fourtimes for 45 yards. They recovered their only fumble.

On defense, Case led all West Lincoln defenders with 16 totaltackles. Lee Jones had 10 stops while Roberts picked up nine. CodyWarren had a fumble recovery.

Enterprise was led on offense by May who had 104 yards and threetouchdowns on 14 carries. Erik Clark picked up 82 yards on ninerushes.

Everett was good on six of nine passes for 85 yards and thetouchdown to May.

May caught two Everett passes for 23 yards including the score.McKee had 22 yards on two receptions while Trey Herrington andPowell had one catch apiece for 26 and 14 yards respectively.

Tate Ball punted three times for a 23.7-yard average. TheJackets lost their only fumble of the game and were penalized sixtimes for 70 yards. They had 13 first downs.

The Enterprise defense was led by Drew Waldrop’s six tackles.Chris Moak picked up five stops with McKee and Powell both havingfour and a half. McKee had two interceptions and Chris Fuller had aquarterback sack.

Both teams are on the road Friday for their next contests. WestLincoln travels to Natchez Cathedral while Enterprise visits Mt.Olive.
