St. Andrew’s rallies past Lady Hornets

St. Andrew’s rallied for two runs in the last two innings andedge Loyd Star’s Lady Hornets 5-3 Monday on Loyd Star’s new field.Lincoln County Superintendent of Education and former Loyd Starprincipal Terry Brister threw out the first pitch.

“We didn’t come through with the hits when we needed them,” saidLoyd Star coach Jan Delaughter. “The errors hurt us but Nikki(Hunsucker) did a good job,” pitching.

Hunsucker was replacing sophomore pitcher Caroline Burks whounder went four hours of facial surgery Monday at the University ofMississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Burks was hit in the facewith a line drive while pitching against Bogue Chitto on March 29.She sustained a broken nose and a cracked bone on her forehead.

Her mother, Jamie Burks, said her daughter was released from thehospital Monday night. “Caroline is in great spirits and she islooking forward to pitching again. We are thankful for all theprayers. She rested well Monday night.”

Hunsucker walked 5 batters and struck out 5.

Winning pitcher Lindsey Graeber fanned 6 batters and walkednone.

A triple by Amber Restivo and a double by Hunsucker led LoydStar’s offensive. Shara Johnson singled twice. Christine Newell andAshton Williams also hit safely.

The Lady Saints (6-11, 3-9) got a double from KatherineNicholas.

“We did good on pitching and defense,” said St. Andrew’s coachBurney King. “We used the short game effectively.”

Coach Delaughter said a full ceremony at the new field wouldtake place Thursday when the Lady Hornets host Salem. The seniorswill be recognized during a pregame ceremony.

In the JV game, Loyd Star beat St. Andrew’s6-2. Ariel Hunsucker was the winning pitcher with 3 strikeouts and4 walks to her credit.

Olivia Long absorbed the loss. She fanned 4 and walked 3.

A single by Candace Bennett led Loyd Star in batting. CharisseWilliams singled for St. Andrew’s.
