Wesson shuts out Hornets

WESSON — Behind senior lefthander Nick Gunter, the WessonCobras defeated the Loyd Star Hornets 2-0 in a big Division 6-2Amatchup Friday night. Wesson improves to 7-5 overall and 5-2 indivision play. Loyd Star drops to 8-9 and 4-1 in divisionaction.
Gunter recorded nine strikeouts, walked two batters and allowedthree hits. He struck out the final four batters of the game.
“It’s a big win,” said Gunter after the game. “I give all to theLord. I thank him.”
Loyd Star senior Jared Britt (2-2) went seven innings as well.He had two strikeouts, one walk and four hits allowed. Britt hadpitched seven innings Tuesday night against St. Andrew’s.
Wesson first-year head coach Hugh Knight said he was pleasedwith Gunter’s gutsy performance. “Nick is a competitor. He has alot of talent. He had the stuff tonight. He kept them offbalance.”
The Cobras broke the scoreless deadlock with the Hornets in thebottom of the fifth inning. Wade Williams led off with a blooperand advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mason Warren. BrandonHood doubled to score Williams for a 1-0 lead. Gunter got on firstfollowing a Loyd Star infield error and Hood stole home for thesecond run before the third out was made.
Loyd Star took advantage of two Wesson fielding errors andloaded the bases twice, first with one out and then two outs, butcouldn’t score a run.
In the second inning, the Hornets left two runners stranded.
On the night. Loyd Star left eight runners on base while Wessonhad seven stranded. The Hornets committed three errors and theCobras finished with two.
Hitting a single for Wesson were Tyler Broome and ChancePeets.
Loyd Star third baseman Austin Fagan led with a double. MatthewDelaughter, David Cuevas and Britt singled.
“I’m proud of them,” added Knight. “It was a big game for us inthe conference. We got some timely hits. We got the clutchhits.”
Junior varsity
Wesson beat Loyd Star 5-0. Cory Puckett was the winning pitcherand Matt Floyd absorbed the loss.
In Tuesday’s division games, Wesson visits St. Andrew’s and LoydStar hosts McLaurin. The games begins at 4:30 p.m. with the JV and6:30 with the varsity.
